To mark the death of US-actor Philip Seymour Hoffman on February 2, 2014, the 64th Berlin International Film Festival will present a special screening of Capote at the CinemaxX 6 on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 9.00 pm.
The Berlinale screened Bennett Miller’s Capote, for which Philip Seymour Hoffman received a Golden Globe and then an Oscar for Best Actor, in the Competition in 2006. This outstanding artist also appeared in other films at the Berlinale, such as Richard Kwietniowski’s Owning Mahowny (Panorama 2003) or Spike Lee’s 25th Hour (Competition 2003). Unforgettable are also two performances that Philip Seymour Hoffman presented at the Berlinale in 2000: in Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, winner of the Golden Bear.
In memory of actor and director Maximilian Schell, who passed away on February 1, 2014, producers Margit Chuchra (mm-production), Dieter Pochlatko (EPO) and Werner Schweizer (Dschoint Ventschr) are presenting his film Meine Schwester Maria (My Sister Maria) in collaboration with the Berlin International Film Festival and the German Film Academy. This special screening will be showing at the Urania Filmbühne Berlin on February 9, 2014 at 3.00 pm. In this complex film portrait, Maximilian Schell reflects on his relationship with his sister, showing great respect for her achievements, but also sorrow and regret when it comes to her difficulties in later life. Tickets may be ordered directly at the Urania Filmbühne (phone: +4930/218 9091).
In 1962 Maximilian Schell won an Oscar for his performance as Hans Rolfe in Stanley Kramer’s Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). His documentary Marlene, about Marlene Dietrich, was screened in the Competition in 1984. He returned to the Competition as an actor in Jeroen Krabbé’s Left Luggage in 1998.
