On Friday, April 19th, Imagine Film Festival's closing night, the winners of the following festival awards were announced.
Black Tulip - Best Feature Film
The Black Tulip-jury, consisting of Bor Beekman (journalist), Wim Castermans (programmer Offscreen) & Hedwig van Driel (journalist), awarded the Black Tulip Award to:
COHERENCE by James Ward Byrkit (US, 2013)
From the jury report: 'Films that can be defined as a 'mindfuck', often get bogged down by soulless puzzling. 'Coherence', however, handles it flawlessly, by addressing the intriguing concept of parallel universes, but treating the inevitable puzzling as a secondary matter. Exceptional is also the fact that dinner table conversations in the mumblecore tradition, a cardboard box and some glow sticks were enough for this low budget film to evoke an image of infinite worlds: a double credit to director James Ward Byrkit, who was also responsible for the sharp script.'
Director James Ward Byrkit expressed his thanks in a video message. The award is a framed certificate. |

The MovieZone Jury, consisting of Axel Vreken, Anna-Elyse Witvoet, Mariche de Graaff and Melissa Lagerwaard, awarded the MovieZone Imagine Award to:
CHEAP THRILLS by E.L. Katz (US, 2013)
From the jury report: 'This intense film affected all of us. We were particularly impressed by the acting skills of the main character. Because of the handheld film work, it felt like we were actually there and we truly felt the fear and helplessness of the protagonist. The art direction and use of cold colours engulfed us completely in the chilly atmosphere.'
Director Evan Katz also expressed his thanks in a video message. The award is a framed certificate.
Special mention by the MovieZone jury for:
COHERENCE by James Ward Byrkit (US, 2013)
The MovieZone Imagine Jury is a collaboration of EYE and the Imagine Film Festival and is made possible with the help of SNS REAAL Fonds. The jury members watch an extensive selection of festival films, and the film they like best is presented with the MovieZone Imagine Award. This award is intended to promote the film to a young audience. The film then also becomes eligible to be included in one of EYE's film educational programmes, like MovieZone (www.moviezone.nl). |

Méliès d’Argent - Best European Fantastic Film
The Méliès-jury, consisting of Sacha Polak (filmmaker), Iván López Núñez (filmmaker) and Camiel Schouwenaar (filmmaker), awarded the Méliès d'Argent 2014 for Best European Fantastic Film at Imagine to:
DER SAMURAI by Till Kleinert (Germany, 2013)
From the jury report: 'The winner of the Méliès 2014 is a personal film that shows the protagonist's inner world in a surprising manner. This graduation film, made with a small budget and co-financed by crowdfunding, feels like an adult story. In an original way, the maker manages to combine the genres of thriller, horror, coming of age and even Samurai film into a personal film. The director gradually builds up this thrilling cat-and-mouse story and never loses control. The jury unanimously decided that the dance scene at the end of the film was unforgettable. His new film will be eagerly awaited.'
Director Till Kleinert expressed his thanks in a video message. The award is a framed certificate.
A special mention of the Méliès jury for:
DE POEL by Chris W. Mitchell (NL, 2014)
Winner Méliès d’Argent – Best Short European Fantastic Film
The Silver Méliès shorts jury, consisting of Anton Damen and Barend de Voogd, gave the award to:
RESET by Marcus Kryler and Fredrik Åkerström (Sweden, 2013)
From the jury report: 'What begins as a kind of costume drama set in a small house in the fields, becomes more mysterious by the minute. The photography is beautiful. The lonely, but resolute little girl is cast perfectly in the main part. You keep hoping she will find her father back. That she will discover the key. Crack the code. Even though it quickly gets creepier and you don't know who to trust anymore.'
The directors expressed their thanks in a video message. This award is a framed certificate as well.
The Méliès Awards, named for French film pioneer Georges Méliès (1861-1938), are an initiative by the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation (EFFFF). More information about the EFFFF can be found on www.melies.org. |

Time Capsule Award – Best online festival trailer
For the fifth consecutive year, Imagine organised a Time Capsule contest, in which visitors, fans and other creative people were invited to produce a festival trailer. Form and content are free, but the length – 30 seconds – and the theme – Fantastic Science – were set.
Out of all the entries, three were selected to serve as a starter to the main films during the festival. They were Cerebrum (Gerard Gunsing), Looking for Laike (The VideoMatic) and Time Capsule Imagine Film Festival 2014 by PostApocalypticVideo.
The jury, consisting of Anton Damen and Chris Oosterom, gave the award to:
LOOKING FOR LAIKA by TheVideoMatic
From the jury report: '… a trailer that portrayed the Fantastic Science theme in an original way and, completely in tune with the festival poster, transported the viewer to a different world and shows that Imagine has a universal appeal. The animation is professional and quirky, and the sophisticated sounddesign with beautiful beeps and bleeps finishes the message off perfectly.'
The makers accepted the award in person. The Time Capsule was a framed certificate this year. |
