The Kong Show: KONG SKULL ISLAND, Hiddleston, Larson, Jackson Deliver “Bigly”

KongTradeBankAd17

When the original KING KONG was released by RKO in March of 1933, some of the trade ads included a tie-in between Kong’s big bang box office receipts and the failed banks of the Great Depression roaring back to profitability. It was a nostalgia sell, a heart-tug for a pre-code Hollywood monster romp, the likes and scale of which had never been seen on the silver screen.

Kong33pstcrd17

In a quick recap, Merian C. Cooper was turned down at Paramount, then skipped over to RKO, David O. Selznick bit, but bailed out during production; titled “The Beast,” “Eighth Wonder of the World,” “Ape King,” and “Kong,” Selznick insisted the title be changed to KING KONG. The wow-title was a huge pivot for a scream queen screenplay written by Edgar Wallace.

Much like the old KONG, the new KONG: SKULL ISLAND also released in March 84 years later, by Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures, just shot past all expectations for the weekend opener, to the tune of $61 M USD. And this is up against the formidable Hugh Jackman franchise starrer LOGAN. Why is KONG SKULL ISLAND doing so well? Nostalgia, folks, Viet Nam war era discontent, and throw-back technology right down to the brick-like cell phones and dot matrix, white and light lime green striped perforated IBM computer paper from the 70’s of this KONG.

Call it a Guardians of The Galaxy overhaul of the gorilla classic, KONG even features a key plot point role by GOTG’s John C. Reilly. The film script has so many great touches, for example Brie Larson’s photojournalist character says she was “an anti-war photographer” embedded in Vietnamese conflict.

Shea Whigham plays a hardened Viet Nam veteran who says "we didn't lose the war... we abandoned it." All creative plot embellishments work here. Plus, Bradley Cooper’s brother from Silver Linings Playbook, that same actor Shea Whigham, has some other soulful moments in this, also his Playbook alum John Ortiz makes an impact. All the supporting characters are extremely well-thought out.

Including some kid who looks like he actually is in Apocalypse Now-then, even though this is KONG 2017, ironically shot in Vietnam, here. His name is Thomas Mann, from Portland, Oregon, a kid we will see much more of based on his palpable brand of youthful sincerity in this picture.

Richard Jenkins, the one and only, shows up as a US Senator, another nice touch. The guy who should have passed on the remake of BEN HUR, Toby Kebbell, shows us why this British-born actor is still very gifted as Chapman, whose letter-writing home to “Dear Billy” is a liet-motif and masterstroke of the emotionally rich storytelling throughout this movie.

Anyway, KONG SKULL ISLAND is making money because it’s worth the money. Main stars Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers,""Thor: The Dark World"), Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson ("Pulp Fiction,""Avengers: Age of Ultron"), John Goodman ("Transformers: Age of Extinction,""Argo"), Oscar-winner Brie Larson ("Room,""Trainwreck"), Jing Tian ("Police Story: Lockdown"), Toby Kebbell ("Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"), John Ortiz ("Steve Jobs"), Corey Hawkins ("Straight Outta Compton"), Jason Mitchell ("Straight Outta Compton"), Shea Whigham ("The Wolf of Wall Street"), Thomas Mann ("Me and Earl and the Dying Girl"), with Terry Notary ("Dawn of the Planet of the Apes") and all rock the blockbuster with Oscar-nominee John C. Reilly ("Chicago,""Guardians of the Galaxy"), knock it out of the park.

In sum, everybody delivers "bigly" as the word goes these days. It's the perfect storm of escapism for a time that parallels the economic uncertainty of the early 30’s. Our KONG, the 2017 inhabitant of this silver screen Skull Island, has his own agenda, and is rebranded as a 2.0 of monster movie heroes.

Not to give too much away, you won’t guess the plot twists, and may be slightly disappointed by a thin and pale John Goodman whose real purpose here seems to be to show the perils of weigh loss on humor quotient. That said, Goodman also pulls his weight in a line-up of truly excellent performances for the genre, and even for any genre.

Watch Tom Hiddleston and others in this official featurette on KONG SKULL ISLAND…

Here’s What Warner Bros Has to Say About Their Gorilla-Not-To-Be-Missed

Official Statement: The producers of Godzilla reimagine the origins of one the most powerful monster myths of all in "Kong: Skull Island," from Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Tencent Pictures.  This compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts ("The Kings of Summer") tells the story of a diverse team of scientists, soldiers and adventurers uniting to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific, as dangerous as it is beautiful.

Cut off from everything they know, the team ventures into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature.  As their mission of discovery becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape a primal Eden in which humanity does not belong. Vogt-Roberts directed the film from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy and Max Borenstein and Derek Connolly, story by John Gatins. Kong: Skull Island is produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni and Alex Garcia, with Eric McLeod and Edward Cheng serving as executive producers. The creative behind-the-scenes team included director of photography Larry Fong (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), production designer Stefan Dechant (supervising art director True Grit, Avatar), Oscar-nominated editor Richard Pearson (United 93, The Bourne Supremacy) costume designer Mary Vogt (the Men in Black films) and composer Henry Jackman (Captain America: Civil War).

The team also included Oscar-winning makeup supervisor Bill Corso (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and supervising stunt coordinator George Cottle (Interstellar, The Dark Knight Rises). The legendary Kong was brought to life at a whole new scale by Industrial Light & Magic, with two-time Oscar winner Stephen Rosenbaum (Avatar, Forrest Gump) serving as visual effects supervisor.

To fully immerse audiences in the mysterious Skull Island, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and his cast and filmmaking team filmed across three continents over six months, capturing its primordial landscapes on Oahu, Hawaii—where filming commenced—on Australia’s Gold Coast, and finally in Vietnam, where filming took place across multiple locations, some of which have never before been seen on film. Warner Bros. Pictures/Legendary Pictures and Tencent Pictures present a Legendary Pictures Production, a Jordan Vogt-Roberts Film,Kong: Skull Island. The film will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theatres, and IMAX beginning March 10.

Film Review: The Lost City of Z

By Maria Esteves – March 14, 2017

Dedicated to the Loving Memory of My Father Getulio Esteves (1927-2016).

THE LOST CITY OF Z is a compelling true story based on the three voyages of a British explorer Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam) during 1906-1954, who journeyed to find a city between Bolivia and Brazil, in the uncharted Amazonian jungle, the oldest civilization known to mankind. Raised from humble beginnings, the first voyage, allowed Percy to redeem his family name and was welcomed in the inner circle.

In 1912, faced with betrayal and death from crew members, Percy’s second voyage to find the city he called the glory of “Zed” failed.

“Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?” – Robert Browning

In December 3, 1924, funded by United States Journalists, Percy courageously declares a third voyage with his son Jack (Tom Holland) to find the lost city of Z (Zed, Zen, Zion) in the uncharted Amazonia!

“So much to life is a mystery.” – Percy Fawcett

Fawcett’s exploration, a two-year journey up the river Rio Verde in a sailing barge was home to the explorers until they reached their discovery. Shall we journey at the river that flows to the city of Z? Yes, we’ll journey at the river, the beautiful river, that flows to the city of Z. Soon we’ll reach the city of Z, our voyage will seize, our hearts will be at peace. At the river, the beautiful river that flows to the city of Z!

March 31 – April 2, 2017

Welcome, filmmakers, to the Maryland International Film Festival-Hagerstown. We are excited about our 6th year coming up on March 31 - April 2. For 6 years, we've been bringing in the finest films from around the world. The film festival became a 501(c)3 and launched in 2009 and now screens more than 70 films each year! Hollywood Director Joe Carnahan is our creative director, and has been a powerful partner with our festival! He has brought us such films as "The Grey" and "The A-Team" with Liam Neeson and now is slated for 'Bad Boys for life'. He now has his own production company with Frank Grillo, and has recently signed a deal with Sony Entertainment to work on their Adaptation of 'UNCHARTED'. Most of our previous winners of 'Best Feature' have obtained distribution. Our winner two years ago, 'BEREAVE', signed a distribution deal last year and said, " I wish to take a moment to tell you that your hospitality and your wonderful festival helped our film stand out for distribution. Thank you for that, and we'll be sending you more of our work in the future.” So join us! We look forward to having you screen at our 6th anniversary!

The festival is conveniently located downtown; we're in the middle of the arts and entertainment district. And after the films, we host some of the best after parties with live bands and fantastic food and drinks!

The European Genre Forum has selected seven projects to take part in its first training cycle, starting in April this year. With seven projects from six countries, the projects are well spread out geographically. The stories reflect the wide variety of fantastic cinema, from the folk legend of Striguni to the supernatural tragedy of Hum and from the search for dreams in The Woolgatherer’s Store to the cannibals of Family Dinner. There is Celtic legend in The Leprechauns, a sea monster in Mindscape, a sex date gone wrong in Thaw and a mix of heist and horror in Sewer.

First wave of selected projects:
Family Dinner - Capra Films (Austria)
Hum - Parsley Productions (United Kingdom)
The Leprechauns - Causeway Pictures Ltd (United Kingdom)
Mindscape - Bruno Isaac (Portugal)
Striguni - Ziva Productions (Croatia)
Thaw - Demeter Films (Spain)
The Woolgatherer’s Store - Fast & Loose Productions (The Netherlands)

All participants will attend The Director’s Lab that takes place during the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam from the 17th to the 21st of April. Interview With Writer/Director Dmitry Milkin For Award Winning Animation Short 'Curpigeon'
Interview With Writer/Director Dmitry Milkin For Award Winning Animation Short 'Curpigeon'Dmitry Milkin

Writer/director Dmitry Milkin's award winning 3D animated short 'Curpigeon' (2016) is making audiences coo and awe as it tells the story about birds communicating with humans in a spiritual transcendent way. The ancient Egyptians did this, so why not in 2016 with a group of old bonding men in a community park? Reminiscent of Pixar's 'UP' (2009), this unique animation leaves audiences feeling closer to each other and nature in an uplifting and healing way. The film has been such a success that the producers are hard at work on a feature film version of the story.

Having recently screened at the 2017 Sedona International Film Festival, where it won Director's Choice Award for Best Animated Film and Best Animation, 'Curpigeon' will go on to its New York premiere in April at the Tribeca Film Festival.

I interviewed Writer/Director Dmitry Milkin shortly after the Sedona International Film Festival. Here is what he had to say:

Can you explain the word 'Curpigeon' and what it means to you?

DMITRY: Curpigeon is a play on the word 'curmudgeon', which basically means a cranky old man. My story is about  group of old men and a cranky pigeon - it was too good a match to not do.

What made you want to make a film about dealing with grief?

DMITRY: I started it after the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and the Boston Marathon bombing. It was during a time when there seemed to be a new world scale tragedy every month. Grief was in the air. I wanted to offer a story that helped children and adults process grief in a healthy way - by looking to their community for support, rather than isolating themselves.

Do you think animation can capture human emotion better than live action sometimes?

DMITRY: No, not necessarily. What animation does is offer a method to deliver complex emotions and themes, to an audience of all ages, in a digestible and entertaining way. I call it "hiding the peas in the mashed potatoes."

Can you explain the pairing with the human characters and the birds in the film?

DMITRY: A major theme in this film is companionship. While the group of men and pigeons form a community, within that group are individual pairings. This is both true for most friend circles, and a useful device we used to show that Rocky (our main character) is an odd man out. The question the audience forms is "Does this pigeon just not have an old man companion because he's clearly a jerk, or is someone missing?" We had a lot of fun matching the designs of the men with their pigeon counterparts. The pairings share basic shapes in their design - from a box, to a lollipop, a kidney bean, or an ice cream on a cone that's been licked on the side.

What made you fall in love with animation as your preferred medium? And did you always know you want to write and direct or did you fall into it?

DMITRY: I immigrated to the states when I was a kid from Soviet Russia as a political refugee. It was hard to assimilate. Watching 'Aladdin', 'Lion King', etc., basically on loop helped me learn English. My background is screenwriting for all mediums, but I've had a lifelong affinity for animation.

Do you think animation has a lot of room to grow in the future of indie film or do Disney and DreamWorks own the market?

DMITRY: It's a really exciting time in animation right now. The technology has become much more available, and therefore cheaper. The is now a spectrum of studios (from startups to the the big kahunas like Disney and DreamWorks) which can all deliver the industry standard quality. You can deliver a feature animation for 10 million dollars now, which is nothing to sneeze at, but is put in perspective when you look at a PIXAR film costing 120 million dollars. Sure there are short cuts and compromises one may need to take, but that doesn't make or break the film. The only limitation becomes one's imagination.

Your film just screened at the Sedona Film Festival and won Best Animation. How has that experience been?

DMITRY: Brilliant! It was an amazing week. The people from the festival, and all of Sedona, were amazing true champions of film. I thank them for the honor they bestowed on 'Curpigeon', and their vast hospitality. It was an experience that I will always remember and treasure.

Audiences clearly love your film. What have the responses been like?

DMITRY: In a word: Validating. I had Sally Field's Oscar speech in my head the whole time. While the audience was watching the film, I was watching them. Seeing their expressions change with each emotional beat, each comic gag, each dynamic spectacle, was the exact catharsis I needed after a four year production.

Will you be hitting more festivals soon?

DMITRY: We are, and we are very excited! 'Curpigeon' is very early in its festival run and the reception has ready been unbelievably positive. Next we will screen at the Sonoma Film Festival and Garden State Film Festival. Also we are thrilled to be part of the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival this April.

Your next steps are to make the film into a feature. How are you going about doing that and will it be the same theme more or less?

DMITRY: The feature version is currently in development and it's a dream come true to be working on it. It takes the two main characters of the short and places them in a large scope adventure. The story focuses on the importance of communication - especially as a tool to fight discrimination of all kind. With the whole world seeming so divided right now, it's never been more important to teach children the value of empathy.

Poster signed by Arnold for Bruno Chatelin as a thank you token of fantastic Box Office records in France

I have been working with film festivals and helping filmmakers for the past 20 years in various capacities. There was only one big lesson I learnt in festivals: Cannes can work miracles for you, if you do the right thing with the right people : dare, work hard and be creative in each of your actions.

HERE IS THE DETAILED STORY OF A 40M $ HANDSHAKE TO ME FOLLOWING OUR SUCCESS IN CANNES GENERATING AN EXTRA 20M AT DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE PLSUS SAME AT INTERNATIONAL.

As a film distributor I have worked on 180 films including first film (the brothers McMullan by Ed Burns, Indian Runner by Sean Penn, Boyz’ n the Hood by John Singleton which launched his film career in Cannes. I also handled major blockbusters like T2, Independence Day, Hook, Cliffhanger, Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia… opportunity for a close work with Woody Allen, Scorcese, Coppola, Terry Gilliam, Oliver Stone, Brian de Palma, Lelouch…

As  Marketing Director for Columbia Tri-Star Films France I broke several Box Office and company records.

I was appointed Managing Director in charge of setting up and running  the new Joint Venture between Twentieth Century Fox and French major UGC.

I have attended over 300 festivals and had films in many of them,  I ran an international  festival in Cherbourg dedicated to student film and observed festivals as guest, jury, president, panelist or reporter I am an advisory Board Member of 5 Festivals LeMIAFF, CIFF, BIFF, The Film Festival Summit.
My passion for festivals and independent film led me to launch after my distribution days the leading portal for the festival community: filmfestivals.com and fest 21.com established 1995.

I am elected member of the Board of European Film Academy, voting member at Cesar and chair of the International Film Festival Summit Europe.

I have started a consulting boutique focused on online communication and entertainment   because I love sharing my knowledge and helping people connect with each other.

The Creative Coalition Statement on the NEA

Statement of The Creative Coalition on the release of President Trump’s budget proposing the elimination the National Endowment for the Arts.

tcc_logo_web_white.jpg

This morning’s release of President Trump’s proposed budget confirmed earlier reports that he is calling for the elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Creative Coalition strongly opposes this extreme budget proposal and calls on the bipartisan supporters of the arts in Congress to overwhelmingly reject it.

Eliminating funding for the NEA, which represents 0.004 percent of the federal budget, will not even begin to scratch the surface of the nation’s fiscal challenges, but it will have a devastating effect on the ability of many Americans to access the arts in their communities. Sixty-five percent of the NEA’s direct grants go to small and medium-sized arts groups, which are often the only source of arts funding in many rural and underserved communities. Forty percent of NEA-supported activities take place in high poverty neighborhoods. Every dollar invested by the federal government in the NEA leverages $7 from other sources.

“The time has come for all Americans to stand up and call for the Right to Bear Arts™.  We must stand up for the right to maintain an imaginative and expressive population. And we must prevent these draconian funding cuts for the NEA from becoming a devastating reality, “said Tim Daly, President of The Creative Coalition. “We cannot afford to dismiss the arts as something expendable, an unnecessary luxury or treat it as something extra, like dessert. The arts must be part of the main course.”

“How does eliminating funding for the arts make America great?  It is the arts that remind us what is great about America and inspire us to make our world a better place,” said Robin Bronk, CEO of the Creative Coalition. “Eliminating funding for the NEA will not hurt Broadway or Hollywood, but it hurts small town theaters, museums and community arts organizations. It hurts our wounded warriors who experience the healing power of the arts through their participation in NEA funded creative arts therapies. Without the NEA there will be less creativity, less imagination and less freedom of expression and that hurts all of us.”

Theatrical Premiere at IFC CENTER in New York on April 14, 2017
Additional Cities to follow

Abramorama will handle the North American theatrical distribution of John Scheinfeld’s documentary Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary.  The film played to critical and audience acclaim in the fall of 2016 at its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and also at the Toronto International Film Festival, IDFA and DOC NYC. Set against the social, political and cultural landscape of the times, “Chasing Trane” brings John Coltrane to life as a fully dimensional being, inviting the audience to engage with Coltrane the man, Coltrane the artist. Featuring interviews with Wynton Marsalis, Sonny Rollins, Dr. Cornel West, President Bill Clinton and Common, among others, Coltrane’s own words are spoken by Denzel Washington.   The film is produced by Spencer Proffer, John Beug, Scott Pascucci and Dave Harding. “Chasing Trane” will be released theatrically beginning in New York April 14, 2017 with Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and additional cities to follow.

Written and directed by critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker John Scheinfeld (“The U.S. vs. John Lennon” and “Who Is Harry Nilsson...?”), “Chasing Trane” is the definitive documentary film about an outside-the-box thinker with extraordinary talent whose boundary-shattering music continues to impact and influence people around the world. This smart, passionate, thought-provoking and uplifting documentary is for anyone who appreciates the power of music to entertain, inspire and transform.  The film is produced with the full participation of the Coltrane family and the support of the record labels that collectively own the Coltrane catalog.

Although Coltrane did not do any television interviews during his lifetime…and only a handful of radio interview, he will have an active and vibrant presence in the film beyond remarkable performance clips through thoughts he expressed during print interviews. His words are spoken by Academy Award winner Denzel Washington.

“In many of his roles Denzel radiates an exceptional quiet strength.” says the film’s director-writer John Scheinfeld.  "Coltrane, many of his friends told me, embodied a similar strength. That’s why Denzel was my first choice to speak his words and I’m thrilled he made the time to participate in our film.”

The producers of the film stated, "We entered into this project with great respect for John Coltrane and his music.  Our deep appreciation for both only increased during the production of the film, as we witnessed the profound impact that his music still has on so many people — a breadth of audience that defies any simple categorization.”
Richard Abramowitz added, “I’ve been a fan of John Scheinfeld’s work for years, particularly his Harry Nillson film, and the opportunity to work with him on this exceptional piece about a man of unequaled gifts is, indeed, a privilege.”

Coming off their recent success with Ron Howard's The Beatles: Eight Days A Week-The Touring Years, Abramorama has proven time and again that they are specialists at releasing music driven long-form documentaries. Other music related films that Abramorama has launched include Cameron Crowe’s Pearl Jam Twenty; Sacha Gervasi’s Anvil! The Story Of Anvil; Green Day’s Heart Like A Hand Grenade, Laurie Anderson’s Heart of a Dog, Dave Stewart’s Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams, The Zen of Bennett and Bernard Shakey’s Greendale.

Celebrating Asian Cinema Excellence with Finest Filmmakers

The 15th Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum concluded today with the Awards Presentation Ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Filmmakers, leading film financiers and industry professionals from across the world attended to celebrate this HAF milestone, and the presentation of 14 awards that recognise the promising and potential of remarkable film projects.

Over the past three days, HAF attracted leading film financers, producers, distributors and buyers across the world, connecting them with talented filmmakers through business meetings and seminar, pitching and networking events: the newly launched Work-in-Progress Lab facilitated projects already in production to secure post-production funds, sales agents or film festival support; Operation Greenlight helped foster talented local directors to make their debut feature film; sponsored by iQIYI the seminar "New Opportunities in the Explosive Growth of Online Entertainment" invited respected industry leaders to share fruitful insights of latest market trends, and enriching content for on-line platforms.

Celebrating Asian Cinema Excellence
