Mark Felt--The Man Who Brought Down the White House, Review: Clearing Deep Throat

After John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, at age 46, which remains an unresolved conspiracy 53 years later, there was another political event that pinned dirty political tricks on President Richard Nixon around the time of his re-election, and he had to resign soon after being re-elected, in 1974. The Watergate exposé was published by two journalists of the Washington Post and one from Time Magazine, and their source was a top Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) official, code-named Deep Throat. Some guessed and some just felt that Deep Throat was Mark Felt, and Peter Landesman has made a film, based on his 2006 biography, co-authored by family lawyer John O’Connor.

Almost everything about this historic burglary has been debated: Was Felt ‘Deep Throat’, in the first place? How much did he leak? What were his motivations? Was his own office bugged? Did he believe the FBI to be above everything and everybody, and were his acts prompted by “A few good men” philosophy? We’ll never know. Felt went senile many years before his death, and all admissions made 30 years or later after Watergate. In one interrogation about FBI matters, Felt mentioned Deep Throat and then turned pale when asked for details. On another occasion, he is reported to have banged the phone down when his confidante at the Post told him that he was being given the name Deep Throat, derived from a 1972 pornographic film.

Three factors work against the movie from the very beginning. Names that could have struck chords in audiences’ memories, albeit after some jogging, like Richard Nixon, Watergate, Deep Throat and FBI, are not part of the title. Mark Felt, a name that even the media might have put into cold storage, is chosen as the title (well, you cannot avoid your lead character\s moniker getting into the title), with a sub-title that talks about bringing the White House down. Secondly, fact is the White House can never be brought down. Some officials can be, and were, and so was the President. And lastly, the whole incident is now dated. Events go back to 1972-74; various books were written on the subject in the interim, and, most filmgoers feel that a definitive and much acclaimed screen version was made way back in 1976, by Robert Redford.

Okay, so the 1976 film was from the point of view of Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, and the present attempt is to narrate the developments from the point of view of Mark Felt. While the earlier film just showed the informant in a shadow and did not reveal his identity, here Felt is Deep Throat from the time he chooses to latch on to the journalists. Mark Felt also takes a deep, long reflective look at his psyche, his psychotic/alcoholic wife and his angst at the running away of his daughter. Above all, he is depicted as a man who cannot get over being bypassed to head the FBI after the death of his mentor, J. Edgar Hoover, and decides to run a parallel regime as Deputy Director. The Watergate Hotel/Apartments break-in, when Nixon’s Republican men were caught trying to plant explosives, cameras and bugs in the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, kind of takes us back a farther 12 years, when Democrat John Kennedy had defeated Nixon in the 1961 Presidential elections.

Screenwriter, film director, producer, journalist, novelist and painter Peter Landesman (Parkland—on the Kennedy assassination!, Concussion) is the man at the helm. His take on Felt, “He was really kind of a master puppeteer in that sense. And I was also interested in the complexity of his motivations as a man, as a husband, and as a father. I think early on he was a pragmatist. I think as a human being, he was very private, the G-man’s G-man. I also think he was hurt and outraged when he was overlooked for promotion when J. Edgar Hoover died, and they brought in a guy who was a submarine commander in the Second World War (as the Acting Head of the FBI).”  All this does come through in his screenplay and direction, but not in any compelling or commanding way.

Whereas the obvious comparison would be with All the President’s Men, Landesman’s inspiration seems to have emanated from producer Harry Saltzman spy stories of the 1960s (The Ipcress File and Funeral in Berlin) as well as the John Le Carré borderline spy thrillers of this century. In Mark Belt, as in Carré, A lot of characters make it difficult to remember who’s who, especially when they do not refer to each other by name.

‘Action’, which is usually symbolised by a phone call or a meeting in a car, alternates with doors opening and closing, people entering and leaving rooms, or being asked to leave, posturing, and making boastful declarations. Yes, one shot, repeated four or five times, lingers: Felt peering out of the Venetian blinds at his unrealised ambitions. He is usually ambivalent, and the only time he expresses any sentiment is when he makes a list of all possible addresses where he could find his daughter, and keeps posting envelopes to each of them. Maybe the lost look is is the beginning of dementia and memory loss, which consumed him in later years.

Liam Neeson is anything if not sincere. That his personality is difficult to fathom is not his fault. Man of Steel, Batman v/s Superman and Trumbo actress Diane Colleen Lane had her troubled orphan childhood mother role severely truncated on the editing table, and that is a pity. Maika Monroe as Joan, Mark and Joan’s daughter, who disappeared in 1972, also gets limited footage. Joan’s life can be the subject of an amazingly interesting tale. She was a drug-addict lefty, and Mark was Hoover's law-and-order enforcer. While he was ordering surveillance on Students for Democratic Society, and the Weathermen (underground organisation suspected of terrorist plans), she was searching for truth and meaning in communal living, free sex and hallucinogens. While he was fielding calls from President Nixon on the hot-line in his home, she was in Chile, hanging out with members of the Salvadore Allende family.

Marton Csokas is cast as Gray and Tom Sizemore plays Sullivan, the bad men who can be spotted miles away, and when Sizemore swaggers and speaks, you wonder whether he is a gang-lord planted as a mole in the FBI. Turns out both are Nixon boys, and we do remember what Nixon looked like, don’t we? Having been a journalist himself (“I've been through a nasty divorce—director Kimberlee Acquaro, God Sleeps in Rwanda. I've reported from three war zones. I've been shot at, threatened by Russian gangsters, chased by Serbs. I've been in car chases in Watts with Bloods and Crips—black blood gangs in San Francisco”), he gets his journos right. Julian Morris as Bob Woodward, the Washington Post reporter who teamed with Carl Bernstein (married to Nora Ephron, 1976-80, but Harry’ never mentioned the Deep Throat words to his Sally) to expose the Watergate dealings, and Bruce Greenwood as Sandy Smith, Time magazine reporter, come out credible. Sadly, none of the Russian, Serb, Watts Bloods, Crips excitement is anywhere in sight.

One credit must catch the attention of anybody from the Indian sub-continent: editor Tariq Anwar. Born in pre-independence India, his works include Center Stage, The Good Shepherd, Sylvia, Oppenheimer, and American Beauty, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and won two BAFTA Awards. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award for editing The King's Speech. And he came this close to editing Skyfall.

Anwar was born in Delhi, and was raised in Lahore and Bombay. His father was Indian Muslim film actor and director Rafiq Anwar, who’s film Neecha Nagar (1946) brought India its first international prize for Best Film at Cannes. And his uncle, Rashid Anwar, produced the film, which was directed by Chetan Anand.

The ratio of film shot to usage “is very high, something like 50:1, 50 hours for an hour of film,” says Tariq. Ratio apart, Mark Felt is rather slow and classical, even after excessive excisions.

It is an important piece of history. It’s about one of the most famous whistle-blowers in recent memory. It’s deep. It’s an attempt to tell you who he was, what he was and what really happened. It clears the throat. Does it clear history? But what is history, if not perspective?

BERGAMO FILM MEETING
International Film Festival
36th edition, March 10 – 18, 2018

The first tidbit about the BFM36 program is the ample retrospective dedicated to Norwegian actress, director, and screenwriter Liv Ullmann: a brilliant opportunity for a journey across the 20th century authorial cinema - not just Bergman, but also Bolognini, Harvey and Buñuel, among others - that will lead us to the most recent works by Ullmann herself, behind the camera. As usual, the Competition - Exhibition and the Close-Up sections will provide an overview of contemporary cinema, showcasing the latest emerging trends and filmmakers in fiction and documentary, respectively.

9 days packed with screenings, with more than 160 films from all over the world, will make up the program of BFM36 which, thanks to the EU MEDIA sub-program of Creative Europe, will give ample space to the cinema of the old continent. Many international guests, meetings with authors, special events, previews and surprises, guided screenings for schools and younger viewers will enrich the festival's offer, along with a lively side offer of events and proposals ranging between visual arts, music, and comics in collaboration with a consolidated network of cultural institutions in the territory.

THE 2018 RETROSPECTIVE: LIV ULLMANN
The Norwegian actress was born on December 16, 1938, in Tokyo, where her father, an aviation engineer, had moved for work. Upon the outbreak of WWII, the family moved to Toronto first, and then to New York City. In 1945, when her father died, Liv returned to Norway along with her mother and sister. Gifted with sensitivity and intuition, as well as with a vivid imagination, she was enticed by theatre, painting, and poetry from a very young age. Thus, she decided to enroll at the Webber Douglas Academy in London, where she could also cultivate her other passion: cinema.
She made her film debut in 1959, with Ung Flukt (The Wayward Girl) and in 1965 she met Ingmar Bergman with whom she did ten films covering a time span ranging from 1966 to 2003: among them, monumental masterpieces such as Hour of the Wolf, Shame, The Passion of Anna, Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a marriage, Face to face. The two were together for a long time and also had a daughter, Linn, who played some of his father's films while still a child and then became a famous writer, also translated in Italian.
After working with many other major filmmakers, including Jan Troell, Terence Young, Anthony Harvey, Sven Nykvist, Mario Monicelli and Mauro Bolognini, in 1992 Liv Ullmann decided to step behind the camera and directed five films, two of which - Private conversations (1996) and The Unfaithful (2000) - based on scripts by Ingmar Bergman. Her last film, Miss Julie (2014) featuring Colin Farrell and Jessica Chastain, is the adaptation of the theatre drama of the same name written in 1888 by the Swedish playwright August Strindberg.
Liv Ullmann has never stopped working in theatre, both as an actress and director. In 1980 she was the first woman who became UNICEF Ambassador. As an author, she published two very relevant books: Changing and Choices, in which she talks about moments of her life, people she met, family experiences, but also thoughts, reflections and situations that were a turning point in her life. An intimate, soft-spoken yet uncompromising portrait of one of the most important personalities in contemporary cinema.
Liv Ullmann will attend the Festival.
With the patronage of Royal Norwegian Embassy in Rome.

Kristen Bell (The Good Place, Frozen) will host the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, an event which is simulcast live on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. (ET) / 5 p.m. (PT), Executive Producer Kathy Connell announced today. As the SAG Awards has never had an emcee before, Connell and the SAG Awards Committee are breaking a long-standing custom by inviting the multi-faceted actor to fill this prestigious role.

“We are delighted to have Kristen Bell as the first-ever host of the SAG Awards,” Connell said. “This has been a year in which assumptions have been challenged, stereotypes have been shattered, and precedents have been broken. We decided to capture the cultural mood by casting aside one of our own traditions, and we’re thrilled to have such a talented performer like Bell help us do so.”

“I am honored to be part of the SAG Awards, and am a little nervous about being its first-ever host,” Bell said.  “I’m so glad that I’ll be in the company of my fellow actors, many of whom I’ve worked with before, so I know they’ll be warm and supportive. It’s going to be an amazing night.”

Kristen Bell currently stars as the late Eleanor Shellstrop, who may have landed in the wrong afterlife in NBC’s The Good Place, opposite Ted Danson. NBC has renewed the critically acclaimed dramatic comedy for a third season starting in 2018. Also in 2018 she will star in the Netflix comedy Like Father, with Kelsey Grammer as her titular dad.  Bell then is reprising her role as Anna in the 2019 sequel to Disney’s Frozen, the highest grossing animated film of all time. She will next be seen on Dec. 10 in the ABC musical special Encore, which she also executive produced. Her extensive list of credits includes films like A Bad Moms Christmas and CHiPs, and television series such as House of Lies, Veronica Mars, and a guest-starring arc on Parks & Recreation.

LIVING IN THE FUTURES PAST by Susan Kucera, A documentary presented by Jeff Bridges.
USA October 2017 - 83 minutes

Academy Award Winner, Jeff Bridges presents this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the environmental challenges we face. Jeff, alongside prominent scientists and authors, weave evolution, emergence, entropy, dark ecology, and what some are calling the end of nature, into a story that helps us understand our place among the species of Earth’s household. The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

HOW ONE MAN'S DEATH, CHANGED HISTORY

Trailer I Website I Blog on filmfestivals.com ITwitter I Contact I Festival Screeners

An expose of the last King of Iran’s medical story

On January 16,1979, the Shah of Iran Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, left the royal palace, the Peacock Throne and his beloved country Iran for the last time, commencing what became a 19-month odyssey into exile. He wondered hopelessly from Egypt to Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S, then Panama and back again to Egypt where he died furtively at the age of 60. His death had profound consequences for the future of the Middle East and the world, yet the untold medical story of the last King of Iran has to date remained a puzzling mystery. By unraveling the secrecy surrounding this critical period of history, beginning from the onset of the Shah’s illness, to the diagnosis/misdiagnosis and maltreatment, “A Dying King” exposes the main causes of the Iranian Revolution, the pursuant 444 days hostage crisis, and the adversarial relations between the U.S and Iran.

BRUSSELS, 6 December 2017. In its second call of 2017, Screen Flanders has allocated 2.1 million EUR (2,495,850 US$) to 10 new audiovisual projects. The call, which ended on 8 September, also marked the fifth anniversary of the fund and generated well over 16.53 million EUR (19.65 million US$) in audiovisual expenditure in the Flanders region. The economic leverage of 7.87 EUR per invested euro is the highest achieved since the launch of the fund in 2012. Productions receiving funding include an impressive list of international co-productions such as the new feature by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (Kursk); the new BBC series Les Misérables; the third season of the historical drama series Versailles; the Scandinavian series State of Happiness and Cold Courage; and Ari Folman’s latest animated feature Where Is Anne Frank?.

Through the Screen Flanders economic fund, the Flanders government provides financial support to audiovisual productions that spend part or all of their budgets within the Flanders region. Belgian producers can apply for up to 400,000 EUR (475,400 US$). Foreign producers can access the fund by co-producing with a Belgian producer who meets the selection criteria.

International co-productions with Belgium supported by Screen Flanders include the action feature Kursk directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Oscar®-winner Colin Firth in the leading roles; the new BBC adaptation of Les Misérables based on the novel by Victor Hugo; and the third season of the historical drama series Versailles. The fund also supported two Scandinavian series: the Norwegian-Belgian co-production State of Happiness directed by Petter Naess and the Finnish-Irish-Belgian crime series Cold Courage. The animated features Dragon Rider, based on the famous children’s book by Cornelia Funke and Ari Folman’s Where Is Anne Frank? complete the list of international co-productions supported.

The economic fund also invested in local content, including the new feature from cult director Koen Mortier, Angel; the family feature Baba Yega The Movie, based on the Belgium’s Got Talent sensation of 2016; and Kampioenen Forever.

Applications are assessed by a jury consisting of economic and cultural experts. See below for an overview of the projects supported within the framework of the second call of 2017.

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Packed with tournaments, unreleased games, entertainment, workshops, and gaming celebrities, the inaugural Games Con got underway at ADNEC as the ultimate gaming festival in the Middle East, spanning three days from November 23 to 25 and hosting 10,233 visitors.

Games Con attendees lined-up to meet their heroes including YouTube sensations Vikkstar, Zerkaa and Ali A, one of the most popular YouTubers of all time with over 13.2 billion views. Voice over actors Chloe Hollings (Overwatch’s Widowmaker), Brina Palencia (a.k.a) Mad Moxxi, and DC Douglas, voice of Albert Wesker from ‘Resident Evil’ also proved very popular, along with teams from Nasr and Yalla eSports.

Unreleased games were unveiled to the crowd and lucky participants got a chance to test them before they hit the shelves in the new year. Even Ali A tried the hotly anticipated, and as yet unreleased ‘Dissidia NT – Final Fantasy’ live on the Entertainment Stage, powered by HP Omen. In addition, Facebook joined forces with Games Con to demonstrate its new virtual reality technology, Facebook Spaces, while GamerTech built a gaming PC out of a Corvette engine-block live on their stand during the show, and Alienware showcased their new unreleased Area 51 Gaming Desktop.

The Entertainment Stage, powered by HP Omen played host to many of Games Con’s biggest attractions over the course of the weekend including the “Beat the FIFA Video Game Ambassador” Ahmed Al Nasheet, and Pokken Tournament, as well as panel discussions, YouTube gamer showdowns, live performances, and gaming advice. The cosplay competition, where the winners take home a portion of the AED 31,000 prize fund, also drew the crowds. Rhegel Aliling as Timbersaw won Best RPG; Alistair Vowles as Reinheart took home Best FPS; and Andrea Hearn dressed as Zelda received Best Group Award.

Hundreds participated in various competitions and tournaments throughout Games Con, and fans were delighted by the huge quantity of prize give-aways including Hyper X Gaming accessories and a limited-edition Grand Turismo Sport Playstation 4. Competitions like the FIFA Fanta Masters were hotly contested, as players battled for the honour of representing the UAE in the international tournament, and a chance to take home AED 100,000.

Virtual Reality competition VIVE Vs MSI saw teams compete for the HTC VIVE worth AED 2,599 each, while players who took the top spots in the Tekken 7 and Injustice 2 competitions were awarded with their share of the $20,000 on offer across both events which took place on Friday and Saturday, and the MSI Dota 2 Tournament finals were a buzzing hive of activity as visitors stayed late into the evening to watch the Colligate eSports Final on Saturday. It wasn’t all new-age technical wizardry however there were also tabletop tournaments in Magic: The Gathering, Catan, and Splendor.

Finally, there was also a full schedule of workshops throughout the weekend aimed at budding game developers, as well as those who have an interest in what it takes to put some of these incredible experiences together. Here, the National Media Council (NMC) invited all video-game developers to a national contest, where amateur and professional developers pitched their ideas for video games to a jury of professional developers and production studios.

The brands exhibiting at the event considered it a resounding success, including Febronia Armia, from GKD who brought four unreleased games to the show including Monster Hunter: World, Gravel, Attack on Titan 2 and Dynasty Warriors 9, who said, "Wonderful management from the entire team behind the event. Best organized gaming event in the region in the last few years."

Suzy Pallett, Group Director Trade & Consumer, Informa Exhibitions added: “With over 10,000 gamers joining us this weekend, it has been a great pleasure to launch Games Con. We want to thank the industry, the consumers and Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority for supporting us in this hugely successful launch. We are already in planning for an even bigger event in 2018 where we will create a hub for gamers in the MENA region to Game Together!”

European Film Academy Board appeals to the EP members to respect the JURI mandate on the proposed Broadcasters’ Regulation

On the occasion of the General Assembly of the European Film Academy (EFA) in Berlin on 9 December 2017, the EFA Board has expressed its deep concern that the future of Europe’s film culture may be at stake should the fundamental principle of financing and distributing movies across the EU be unnecessarily jeopardized. As an example, the EFA Board has mentioned the so-called Broadcasting Regulation and the proposed extension of the Country of Origin (CoO) principle, which it sees as a threat for the territoriality principle and the economic viability and diversity of European film culture.

The Board reminded of the fact that the members of the audio-visual sector in Europe, be they writers, directors, producers, actors, or professionals in the fields of production, marketing, distribution and exhibition, have expressed their opposition to the proposed Regulation on numerous occasions. These concerns were considered in all responsible committees of the European Parliament and are also reflected in the well-balanced positioning of the leading Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI).

For the sake of a vibrant and diverse audio-visual landscape and the requirements of the audiences across Europe the EFA Board appeals to the members of the European Parliament to respect this mandate in the plenary session on 12 December.
