You Think Google Has Issues: Rachel Feldman Has Something To Say About Women & Directing, Okay?

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

One hot week in August leading up to a full moon, from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7, there was a kind of ground zero for the D-word from Hollywood to Silicon Valley. We’re talking hot-button issues inclusion, fairness, and equity under the heading of Diversity. If you haven’t heard what happened, a recap is in order.

Here’s a timeline: on July 31 “CBS This Morning” covers a new USC Annenberg study that cites “inclusion crisis” in Hollywood, based on Dr. Stacy Smith’s co-authored academic dissection of 900 films and 39,000 “characters” charted over a decade that prove demographics are not improving in re: diversity, including women behind the camera.

Aug. 1 the fall-out at TCA (Television Critics Association) summer summit in Los Angeles is that, no surprise, CBS execs Kelly Kahl (CBS Ent. Pres.) and Thom Sherman (Sr. Exec. Programming) are mercilessly held to the fire by reporters on diversity stats and the fracas is covered by Los Angeles Times, even with a caveat at 6:45 pm that tellingly announces a quote correction as: “An earlier version of this post quoted Kelly Kahl as saying, "I don't how to answer that." It has been corrected to read "I'm not exactly even sure how to address that.””

A quote correction is a rare occurrence in journalism, and underscores that an ideological brush-fire has started. Nobody means harm, but the stats don’t lie. It’s business as usual, but with resistance now.

By Aug. 3, NBC which is owned by Comcast, also owner of Universal with the banner NBCUNI, uses TCA to introduce its “Female Forward” push that is supposed to address the underrepresentation of women in helmer positions in television.

Slated for 2018-2019 season, a mere 10 women get a shot behind the camera, in a drop-in-the-ocean attempt to correct DGA-compiled stats that only 17 percent of episodes on all platforms were directed by women, with — get this — only 3% by minority women.

Next, over the weekend of Aug. 4 - 6, a bombshell goes off in Silicon Valley with a self-proclaimed “classic liberal” 28-year-old Google software engineer’s memo on a site called Motherboard that pretends to be a counterpoint to the lack of women in tech roles with a screed that includes charts and graphs on why women are “biologically” absent from high-profile engineering jobs in tech, as well as tech in general. Ka-Pow!

On Monday, Aug. 7, the world wakes up to worldwide coverage of James Damore’s surprising anti-PC punch in the gut to women, and suddenly the floorboards are ripped up on gender resentments from Hollywood to Silicon Valley. By Monday night Damore is fired by Google, and Weds., Aug. 9 said memo-writer threatens (and files) a lawsuit for wrongful termination — but the cat is out of the bag, and all gender hell has broken loose. Because if you follow the Damore logic, women have just been handed their ass in every profession.

Rachel Feldman 2

Enter director Rachel Feldman, who is former chair of the DGA (Director’s Guild of America) Women’s Steering Committee, and wow, is she pissed off.

“James Damore, the Google engineer who wrote the controversial 3,300 word memo outlining his reasons why female employees were inferior workers, has been fired. Good for Google! Their response was swift and their message clear; that kind of caveman thinking won’t be tolerated at Google,” Feldman begins. “But responding to pseudo-science that tries to legitimize prejudice is overt and relatively easy to spot. What’s much harder to root out, to see clearly, and eliminate is the insidious infection of unconscious bias.”

“I work in the Hollywood film and television industry as a director and I am a woman. I have more than paid my dues - with a masters degree in directing, numerous prestigious film festivals for grant funded indie films, trained on big studio movies working for famous, brilliant directors, and then directed over 60 hours of network and broadcast television - both episodic television and original movies, as well as taught directing on the Masters level - yet every job is still as hard to get as the first one, and I am called “a first time director” by many.”

In addition to being a director, writer, and filmmaker, Feldman, who is currently working on a script about equal-pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter (FAIR FIGHT), produced the 2013 DGA Women of Action Summit that was a first in the guild’s 80-year history to shine a spot on gender disparity. Ledbetter was born in 1938, and even though a “fair pay act” was named for her in 2009, she continues to fight for an equal share for women — both in representation and in the paycheck.

Ironically, James Damore’s Google platform for his numbskull pontificating about gender has opened the door for a class action suit, with some 60 female employees on board who learned via this scandal that they were paid up to $40K less than their male counterparts in some cases. Rampant sexism is the cause, as in Hollywood.

According to Deadline, an insider Hollywood news site, the EEOC is looking into gender discrimination in the industry’s most famous town in a big way.

“Decades ago producers and those who hire would say overtly sexist things to me and get away with it,” Feldman shares. “When a producer gives you the excuse for not hiring you because they “already had a woman director and the crew didn’t like her,” it was hard to hold my tongue and not point out the idiocy of that statement. But times have changed and now we are supposedly enlightened. We have diversity programs and initiatives up the wahzoo. So why has so little changed for women directors? What happened at Google was clearly terrible, but I wish my own industry were as vigilant in reacting to the perpetual gender exclusion that women directors in film and television live with every day.”

You can also follow her activism on these topics on Twitter @WomenCallAction, and track Feldman as she responds to some tough questions on women and directing here:

Q:  What do you think of the recent Google memo about women (another male-heavy profession, tech), and are the attitudes in tech and movies parallel, if so why is that?

A: James Damore, the Google engineer who wrote the controversial 3,300 word memo outlining his reasons why female employees were inferior workers, has been fired.  Good for Google!  Their response was swift and their message clear; that kind of caveman thinking won’t be tolerated at Google.  But responding to pseudo-science that tries to legitimize prejudice is overt and relatively easy to spot. We have witnessed the tragedies of Eugenics attempting to rationalize genocide and most of us are lucky enough to live in a progressive culture where we strive for equality in every facet of our lives.  What’s much harder to root out, to see clearly, and eliminate is the insidious infection of unconscious bias.

Q: So why has so little changed for women directors?

A: What happened at Google was clearly terrible, but I wish my own industry were as vigilant in reacting to the perpetual gender exclusion that women directors in film and television live with every day. Someone recently asked me if this was ageism because honestly, most of the woman I’m talking about are no longer the girls they were when they started directing in the 90’s.  But when the obstacles we face are exactly the same as the ones we faced 25 years ago, we must admit that gender exclusion is the culprit.

Q: Tricky issue - Kathryn Bigelow, DETROIT, what's your opinion on this production, that director?

A: I thought DETROIT was very strong and I believe that the race conversation about a white woman telling this story is misplaced. Kathryn Bigelow is at the top of her game, she doesn’t need us to talk about her. I believe what we need to talk about the thousands of NON-CELEBRITY women who are brilliant, skilled, talented, proven, accomplished – and not working.  WHY?  How do we get the industry to pay attention to the women who have been ignored for way too long by gender exclusion?

Q: How about the thorny issue of wanting to be counted as a female director, but wanting to be seen on the world stage as a Director, no gender?

A: I think that women directors who have already had some measure of success can afford to take this position, but from my activist seat and from the position of having a career that has been severely affected by gender exclusion, I feel that any women who takes this position is doing a disservice to her sister filmmakers.  Not proclaiming your gender as a woman director in this day and age feels a bit like privilege to me.  We must fight for every woman to have a fair share and we will only do that if we join forces as women behind the camera.

Q: Top ten women director list, your choices (living or dead, domestic and international)?

A: It’s important that we banish the notion that there are only a handful of directors! We are a huge, underutilized labor force, and there is AN ARMY OF HIGHLY SKILLED DIRECTORS in both film and television. Find us, hire us.There are so many brilliant, expressive voices to choose from but anyone I would name is already well known.  What I’d like to do it to invite our industry to hire new directors who they may never have heard of before.  These two links will allow for a great exploration: http://www.thedirectorlist.com/database/thedirecorlist.com and here.

Q: Are initiatives from groups like Geena Davis' gender institute helpful?

A: The GDIGM is a great organization and quite effective. Geena is a great speaker and Madeline is a wonderful advocate.  We need more female protagonists and girls and women on screen who are not stereotyped, sexualized or victimized.  These are hugely important issues.

Q: What's the greatest challenge of directing for women -- getting funded, hiring enough women, etc?

A: The greatest challenge for women is to squash the idea that we don’t exist. Day after day we hear the same refrain - that there are only a handful of directors to hire - while THOUSANDS of us with Oscars, Emmy’s, Sundance awards, and hundreds of credits are ignored.  Why?  Why is all the focus on change to develop a pipeline for the future, with educational programs for new directors, when there are so many of us trained directors who could be working now and changing the stats NOW! The answer is that many of us don’t have agents, we are invisible - and why don’t we have representation? Because the agencies only want to hire hot celebrities who bring in fast money.  This cycle must change!!!

Q: Who is your favorite female director, or top three favorites and why?

A: I’d rather not talk about my s/heroes, but instead introduce folks to a tiny, tip of the iceberg list of hard-working, accomplished women who you’ve never heard of. This is by no means intended to be exhaustive or comprehensive, and this list focuses on television and not features.  There are thousands of talented women in the independent space, with stunning, award winning films – and many more in TV as well - let’s promote these women and get them working.

Feldman’s Director Short List

Victoria Hochberg, Gloria Muzio, Neema Barnett, Debbie Reinisch, Hanelle Culpepper, Martha Coolidge, Amy Heckerling, Tanya Hamilton, Tessa Blake, Kat Candler, Shannon McCormack Flynn, Ellen Pressman, Leslie Libman, Vicky Jenson, Stacy Title, Linda Feferman, Matia Karell, Maggie Greenwald, Debroah Kempmeir, Debra Granick, Darnell Martin, Anna Forester, Heather Cappiello, Martha Coolidge, Nicole Rubio, Tanya Hamilton, Tessa Blake, Kat Candle, Leslie Libman, Beth Spitainy, Daisy Von Scherier Mayer, Jan Eliasberg, Elodie Keene, Diana Valentine, Jessica Landaw, Julie Hebert, Julie Anne Robinson, Katherine Brooks, Martha Mitchell, Nicole Kassell, Nzingha Stewart, Rachel Talalay, Rose Troche, Stacey Black, Alexis Korycinski, Allison Anders, Ami Mann, Amy Redford, Anna Mastro, Anne Renton, Catherine Jelski, Claudia Weil, Dee Rees, Helen Hunt, Jessica Yu, Donna Deitch, Kasi Lemmons, Lily Mariye, So Yong Kim, Neema Barnette, Tina Mabrey, Tanya Hamilton…

Q: Is film school a non-starter in production for women, what about AFI's women in directing program, and is Sundance viable for women?

A: Film schools are great if you want to learn how to make movies and meet others who love the same. I have an MFA from NYU in directing and have taught directing in the MFA program at USC, but you don’t have to go to film school to learn to make films. It’s important to note that women graduate at 50% of film school classes but the employment drops off the moment they enter the workforce. We exist, we are interested and trained, we just don’t get the opportunities.

Q: About getting distribution and screenings -- is it the same dog-and-pony show for any director?

A: If your project has a female protagonist you are in for a hard road. If you can’t get one of the top 10 female actors who are interesting to foreign sales, your chances are slim to none. These are insidious forms of gender discrimination and ones that need to be challenged.

Q: On how to promote a film -- is it an advantage to say a woman is at the helm, or is it better to go in blind on that in some cases?

A: It’s probably never an advantage to be a woman director unless you are already a celebrity, no matter what the media might claim. But I believe that for better or for worse, if we are not brave and proud and willing to take the heat - things will never change.

Q: What about sexism and entries into foreign (international) film festivals, any thoughts?

A: Women are terribly excluded from film festivals.  More of the same.

Final Thoughts on Similarities, Call it "GoogleWood"

In closing, here’s a metric ex-Googler James Damore doesn’t understand: the ageism against men in tech is so ingrained that by 26, most men are done in the fast lane if they haven’t migrated from the engineering track to management. In Hollywood, most women are done by 26 as ingenues, and fall out of the fast lane if they don’t accept character roles. The point? Technology was James Damore’s Hollywood, he just didn’t get the rules of the game.

Jameson CineFest, 8 to 17 September reveals line up

$

0

Hungary's leading film event and biggest international film festival Jameson CineFest, 8 to 17 September, brings the freshest and most outstanding film selection to Hungary again: feature films, shorts, documentaries and animations that are domestic, some of them Central European premieres – for the 14th time.

In the feature competition program we selected films that show all the happenings of the cinematic world of the year. Unconventional pieces like Bruno Dumont’s Jeannette, a musical on Jeanne d’Arc’s childhood that is the quasi-unmake of the genre, or Loving Vincent, a British-Polish coproduction that is unique and remarkable because it is the world’s first fully painted feature film. After the Mediterranea, Jonas Caprignano is back to the CineFest with his second feature, A Ciámbra, a true coming of age story as it has never been showed before and also spin-off since one of the supporting characters from the director’s first feature has been given a film of his own now.

The worst and most cruel mother of the world is brought to us by the Mexican thriller-drama April’s Daughter, which is absolutely eerie up to the last frame. A unique love between two men is pictured in the Scottish movie God’s Own Country and we also have the world’s newest sweetheart, Columbus, a poetic tale of emotions conquering against all odds in the program.

Talking about stars, the action-madness of the Safdie brothers Good Time starring Robert Pattinson will only be shown in the big screen at the Jameson CineFest before premiering on Netflix. Francesca Eastwood delivers the best performance of her career in Natala Leite’s M.F.A., raising several hard questions on moral and ethics. Dakota Fanning shows why she is considered an actress of great expectations in the Brimstone that is really not for the faint hearted. Mark Hamill plays a surprising character in Brigsby Bear, a lovable tale from the crossroad of past and future.

A Hungarian movie A hetedik alabárdos, directed by Csaba Vétkes has also made into the competition program. It is the first film that has been shot in the framework of the Incubator program run by the Hungarian National Film Fund. The first Russian feature film in Miskolc, Arrhythmia, features a drunkard paramedic who wants to save himself and his marriage in this twisted world of ours.

In the Open Eye selection we show films that have already proven themselves in the international world of cinema events. The Swedish director’s, Ruben Öslund’s movie The Square is full of hilarious jokes and won the Golden Palm in Cannes. The closing film of the festival is Stephen Frears’ Victoria and Abdul, premiering in Hungary at the CineFest. The director who has a history with the lives of Queens turns to the special relationship between Queen Victoria and her Indian servant, Abdul, aka the Munshi. The Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer in the Israeli Focus is a sweet tale of honesty, friendship, manipulation and politics. A real rarity among movies intended for an adult audience but lacking sex and shocking violence. We only get Richard Gere who reminds us of Woody Allen this time. The Sense of an Ending is also screened in the Open Eye selection. The adaptation of Julian Barnes novel features Jim Broadbent in an excellent role. Suicide, forbidden love, intricate emotions – a remarkable movie. Siberian Love is a truly unique documentary on the fact that in this part of Russia the aim and epiphany of a woman’s life is still having a family and children. So: from 8 September Miskolc is Hungary's film capital city. See you there!

Joe Bang Gives Up James Bond for Channing Tatum in Tenn., LOL, for LOGAN LUCKY

by Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent

Some good news Down South as Channing Tatum, who stars in LOGAN LUCKY directed by Steven Soderbergh, has gotten James Bond to dye his hair blonde — "Dye Another Day" would be a great 007 title -- wait, that's not real news.

JoeBangLLDC17

Even though Daniel Craig’s surprise Hillbilly-meets-Okie mega-cameo as Joe Bang in this movie is quite a towhead, the real news? Well, over a ways yonder in Tennessee the cast of LOGAN, which will be released by Bleeker Street on Aug. 18,  did some great charity work in “The Volunteer State”, also known as home of the Grand Ole Opry, Tennessee.

Tatum? Be There in Tenn... For Charity.

Btw, Tennessee got the moniker volunteer state from the 1812 War, when TN Troops under Stonewall Jackson lent a hand in the Battle of New Orleans to much fanfare in the medal category. But we digress, as last night Channing Tatum and his cast had a blast with films fans.

Always on Deck for Him Selfie & Fans.Always on Deck for Him Selfie & Fans.

It was for a great cause, “Tennessee Benefit Screening for Variety — The Children’s Charity.” All the fun took place at the Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 in Knoxville. What’s the movie about?

Casting Call, Lol.Casting Call, Lol.

Good question. It’s a madcap, multi-layer, moolah-related mash-up by marauding marvelously mysterious (cast-against-type) morons.

How’s that for alliteration?

Katie Holmes rips up her scenes in a movie that officially brings her back into the pack of Hollywood actors of their own merit. And it stars these cool kids: Seth MacFarlane, Riley Keough, Meg Ryan's son Jack Quaid,  and Katherine Waterson. And kids at heart Dwight Yoakam, Sebastian Stan, Brian Gleeson, with Hilary Swank as one itch-on-wheels FBI agent but later as a lovely barfly.

Riley Keough, daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and Elvis' grandkid proves she has a big future on screen by her own lights.

SNC_7184

And James Bond gives a stunning, freakish American accent attempt somewhere in the clinical lab range of a genetically engineered Hillybilly-Okie mix with enough menace to make you wonder how he’d really be in a prison riot.

Plus, Soderbergh, genius director, teases us in the critic world with an "Introducing" credit for Daniel Craig, which is usually only used to debut an actor.

Bond does comedy, whoa, that is new, so maybe Soderbergh isn't completely joking on that intro.

Meanwhile Channing Tatum and Adam Driver are stellar, so weird how well both act, even with the IQ dialed down to O (for “Ozark,” hey it kind of fits in the Netflix series Americana zeitgeist).

Kinda wonder about the writer Rebecca Blunt on this one… Hmm. Emily Blunt’s older sister is Felicity Blunt, married to Stanley Tucci, so it can’t be her. Even IMDB suspects someone big behind this pseudonym.

Another aside, this movie makes you ask yourself what? ‘Is this the first product of Hollywood in the Trump Administration?’

And, so Soderbergh must be psychic, since this movie hits a trend of ‘Real America’ leanings. From Bleeker Street on Aug. 18, and watch for more movies to hit this rustic-icana note in the 45 Era.

Enjoy  Trailer for Team Soderbergh’s Newest Film

The Venice Production Bridge  also focuses on one of the major new trends in contemporary production, which is the co-existence of a diversity of platforms fostered by the digital revolution: television series, web-series and, above all, the new frontier represented by VR/Virtual Reality, which are currently attracting major investment and the most advanced technological research. The Venice Production Bridge intends to attract industry professionals active in these fields.

The idea of building an opportunity for networking for all the professionals involved in production, not only in cinema but across all the audiovisual sector, has shown its relevance in the huge success of the first edition of the Venice Production Bridge in 2016, with a 35% increase of accredited professionals and an enthusiastic feedback from all participants.

Finally, the Venice Production Bridge offers all traditional services such as the Industry Club, the Digital Video Library, an Exhibition Area, Market Screenings, a Business Centre and numerous international panels and networking events.

The quiet strength of pioneering Québécois director Denis Villeneuve

With an unprecedented string of hits and film phenomenon, Quebec gets slammed by a giant tsunami of world class directors: enter Denis Villeneuve, Xavier Dolan and content creators and technology visionaries enter Daniel Langlois. Quebec is a hotbed for homegrown filmmakers, cinema buffs, cinemaphiles and seasoned producers. From all over the world they are coming to Montreal setting up shop seeking the next international co-production and next availability of the hot director lineup. From Spielberg to Netflix - Montreal is the place to be.

Promoting the best Canadian minds in cinema today Telefilm Canada's government film and media commision offers the most international co-productions treaties in the world..

Without a doubt Montreal has grown into the blockbuster hub of animation and feature film productions,  the city where not only are the crews and technicals team world class but the creatives are bursting magnificent fireworks of Hollywoods A - lister darlings and desirables.

It also has a negative effect on the Hollywood production scene where in the not so distant past, Los Angeles unions have protested the exodus of their productions for the favourable tax credits offered by Quebec causing loss of jobs for many film crews.

Toilet—Ek Prem Katha, Review by Siraj Syed: Loo and behold!

There is no point getting revolted by the title. Any fear that the film might have ‘dirty’ scenes can be laid to rest by the realisation that we have a robust Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) that sanitises every film before release. And almost every Indian knows that the current Prime Minister launched a campaign two-and-a-half years ago, to ensure that millions of villages and small towns in rural India that have been doing it in the open for centuries get toilets made. The campaign includes radio and TV spots by celebrities. Come August 11, 2017, and you have a feature film to further the cause: A feature film about the necessity of toilets in Indian villages. Yes. No kidding.

Since the launch of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign), India’s sanitation coverage has reached 60.53 % by May 2017. In 2012, it was merely 38 per cent. The target of 100% is likely to be achieved by October 2019. Some 400, 000, 00 toilets have been built, during October 2014-May 2017. Along the way, there has been some high drama, involving suicides and divorces. Newspapers and TV channels have followed these developments quite faithfully, but it needed a documentary or a feature film to make real impact. Indian documentaries have very limited budgets and even more limited audiences. Moreover, what documentary will be able to compete against the star-pull of Akshay Kumar, among the ruling box-office drawers of the country? So, don’t turn up your nose and/or raise your eyebrows, and let us see what the daringly titled Toilet—Ek Prem Katha (A Love Story) has in store.

Keshav is a manglik (born under adverse stars). He is already 36 but cannot marry, unless he is first married to a buffalo, and then a girl with two thumbs in one hand agrees to marry him. Unless these two things happen, he will be under the evil eye of the stars. The symbolic marriage to a buffalo is performed, even as Keshav’s real-life girl-friend is betrothed to someone else. He finds another, true love, Jaya, a feisty girl whom he encounters at a train toilet. He has never been to college while she is a college topper in their home state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). It takes a while and some face-offs before she reciprocates. Although she is considerably younger, her liberal family gives a thumbs-up to the union.

Speaking of thumbs, she has only one in each palm, which disqualifies her on digital count. Ingenious as always, Keshav, decides to con his father by getting an artificial extra thumb custom-designed and fixed on to Jaya’s palm. Rule of thumb in place, they get married. After a wedding night full of torrid love-making, Jaya is woken up before dawn by violent knocking on the door and repeated calling out of her name. It is the lota (metal pot) party of village women, headed for the forest, to relieve themselves. Jaya is shocked to learn that her husband’s house has no toilet, that every day she must go far away to defaecate in the open, and that the group must return before dawn, lest some passer-by see them in compromising positions. Her parental home had a regular toilet, and she cannot imagine living in a house that has no loo. Besides, what if she needs to do the needful during daytime? No, she is told. What’s worse, none of the houses in that village have toilets, nor are there any of the public variety.

It seems that writers Sidhharth Singh and Garima Wahal (Goliyon Ki Ras Leela—Ramleela, Raabta, web series The Shaadi Boys) made a check-list of the toilet situations and options they could include in the script. We have the great outdoors, a train toilet that is unisex and recurs several times, there are portable toilets that the hero sees at a film shooting outside their village and decamps with one to install at home, there is the home nala (sewer) that we see his father urinating in, the toilet built by the village elder on the first floor because bed-ridden old lady lives there, the toilet that Keshav builds in his house which invites the wrath of his father and the proposed public toilets that have the village up in arms. It’s like imaginative tick-boxes marked by a research team that keep pushing the script along.

They pay special attention to the train toilet. Besides being the spot where the couple first met, Singh and Wahal use it as a clever ploy for Jaya’s god-sent convenience for every-day use at a nearby station, where the train stops for seven minutes, overlooking the fact that passengers are constantly reminded by the railways not to use toilets at railway stations. Besides, trains on the Indian Railways are often late. What then? To their credit, the writer duo have woven in a wholly credible scene wherein some passengers carrying huge luggage block the toilet door while Jaya is in, and her subsequent decision, on emergence, not to pull the emergency chain as Keshav keeps shouting from the motor-cycle, but to proceed to her own home instead.

Rooted in dialect, the early earthy flavour of the dialogue starts wearing off when the writers get too cute, trying to make everything rhyme, and treat every conversation as a clap-trap game of wit and one-upmanship. Some of the comparisons are commendable, like when they have Sanskrit (the ancient Indian language) being equalled with sanskriti (culture/heritage). But when they get into jugaad-pahaad and shauch-soch, it becomes a bit much. In a remarkable chain of co-incidences, a solution pops up whenever a problem gets dicey. Even if the incidents are inspired from real stories, the locking of departmental toilets and the climax are cases of jugaad (fixing) going cinematically overboard.

Veteran editor Shree Narayan Singh (A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby) in his second outing as director (after Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai) is in his own when cutting across the span at a brisk pace in the first half. Later in the film, the editor in him re-surfaces as he follows the seven stage ‘supply chain’ of the Swachh Bharat Campaign. Elsewhere, he gets indulgent. A well-shot holi (festival of colours and other rituals) scene becomes a show-piece, replete with song and dance. When he does it a second time, Singh uses it to create wounds on Keshav’s arm, laying the basis for one of the many in-the-face truisms challenging age-old beliefs, this time about the rival efficacies of mud and Dettol, in treating injuries. At 155 minutes, Toilet—Ek Prem Katha comes across as 4-5 episodes or a TV series where three would have sufficed.

It does take some courage to sign a ‘propaganda’ film like this and mouth dialogue that cannot but be crude. Moreover, romancing a much younger heroine credibly while playing a 36 year-old (he is 50, by a trustworthy source) is no easy task either. Akshay Kumar walks through comfortably. His street smart Keshav would have been too cocky to be credible, had he not managed to impart that requisite spontaneity to the character. Bhumi Pednekar (age 27; Dum Laga Ke Haisha) is some 30 kg down from the overweight heroine of her debut film, and in good fresh, form. This in spite of the fact that we have seen UP heroines delineated almost exactly the same way in a few recent films. The moments when she contemplates before breaking into a smile have you hooked.

As the old man who prefers watching Sunny Leone videos over those of Mallika Sherawat, Anupam Kher breezes through in a uni-dimensional role of little consequence. With some cheesy lines, the garrulous Divyendu Sharma, playing Keshav’s brother, will endear himself to many. Sudhir Pandey as Keshav’s father is made to glower and fume, actions that he is a master at. Often cast as a burly gangster, Rajesh Sharma gets an opportunity to act, albeit in a minor role, as a government official helping the toilet cause. Shubha Khote is seen in a rare non-comic appearance.

Anshuman Mahaley’s camerawork captures creative copter shots and top-angles to give you a panoramic view of the locale. Occasionally, though, shots taken in natural light seemed darker than normal. Five songs take up 21 minutes of the music track, two of them about jugaad and bakheda (imbroglio). One, titled ‘Hans mat paglee’, sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal, is tuneful.

Defaecating in the open is a symptom of much larger sociological and religious baggage that millions and millions of Indians carry, often rooted in scriptures that date back to the several thousand year old discourse, ManuSmriti. Toilet—Ek Prem Katha addresses several other issues and practices as well, like the predicament of a manglik, marriage to a buffalo, a two-thumbed bride, covering of the head by women, the taboo of a divorce, morals in the modern age, Indian-ness and Western influences, and bites off much more than it can chew, as simplistic as loo and behold!

Montreal film festival partners with Red Cross. Virtual reality to give viewers every stage of the Syrian refugee experience – from the destruction of home-town, dangerous travel with children, violent hostility, police abuse incited by media and right wing politicians in certain western countries. Viewing to generate funds for Syrian refugees

In the face of increasing hostility and violence meted out to ever larger numbers of refugees fleeing violent conflict zones (especially Syria), the Montreal International Animation Film Festival (MIAFF) seeks to reach out to the broader society in a meaningful way.

“I think a film festival should not be about irrelevant snobbery, idle gossip, and cocktail parties, but about how we as artists, can contribute to the cause of humanity”, said MIAFF’s founder and CEO, Laurie Gordon.

Referring to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s documentary, The CalaisJungle, City of Dreams and Lost Hopes, Gordon said, “In light of the increasing official violence directed at refugees fleeing war zones to countries such as France,  in the face of fear and hate mongering from certain media syndicates, so-called conservative politicians, and ultimately, neo Nazi groups – even here in Canada, I think it is important for everybody to experience what it means to have to flee absolute devastation, dispossession, destitution, only to face violent hostility and rejection in Europe.” Gordon continued, “I think as Canadians who have extended a warm welcome people fleeing such tragedies, we should be proud, while also providing the public – particularly those falling prey to fear-inducing diatribes - with the opportunity to FEEL the refugee experience. The best way we can, is through virtual reality.”

Gordon continued, “I was delighted at British virtual reality specialist Neil Bell’s production of Migrant’s Journey, and even more so, at Mr. Bell’s willingness to contribute this most important virtual reality piece to the Montreal International Animation Film Festival” She added, I think that the crisis is of such big proportions, the refugees’ plight so tragic, that I am very happy to b teaming up with the International Committee of the Red Cross’ Montreal branch, as well as certain Syrian outreach community organizations in order to both, showcase what a refugee family experiences, AND to fundraise in order to help people in such distress.”

In addition to Migrant’s Journey, the MIAFF’s partnership with the ICRC extends to the showcasing of the film, Junod, about [Swiss] Dr. Marcel Junod’s heroic provision of medical relief to Hiroshima in the wake of that cit’s destruction by nuclear bombing.

Migrant Journey’s premier, and associated fundraiser is set for August 19th, but the installation whereby anyone wanting to experience it, will be able to do so until 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 20th.

The festival separates content into three divisions: North American (U.S. and Canada), International, and Western New York. The Young Student Filmmaker Award is limited to Western New Yorkers and aims to introduce students under age 17 to the film festival experience. In addition, the Original Screenplay competition is always judged by a professional writer, and the five finalists receive notes from the judge. This year, the competition will be judged by acclaimed horror and humor author Jeff Strand.
