Still from A War to End All Wars directed by UK animator Ruth Coggins

The Montreal International Animation FIlm Festival is proving itself to be the hippest animation festival. Discovering the film on social media, MIAFF will deliver a world premiere of UK film  A War to End ALl Wars by director Ruth Coggins. Festival director Laurie Gordon recalls noticing a few stills and trailer of the animated film she first noticed on a Twitter feed a few months ago. She recalls, " It wasn't a submission on any portal but I encouraged the director to submit to MIAFF. I was wowed by the images I saw on a twitter post. A War to End All Wars was not quite finished and the director Ruth Coggins was promoting the film on social media.

Gordon continues, "I felt it was visually captivating and depicted the subject matter of war and death with a naive charm in a stop motion style.

The colours in sepia tones captured the era and history through the stop motion animation style.

BBC news reports that the Wallace and Gromit studio invited Ruth Coggins to their production studios for visit.

Japan Cuts 2017

Japanese Americans, with a population in excess of 1.4 million, are an important part of the fastest-growing multi-cultural segment of the Asian American population and share with the other Asian-American groups high educational achievements and the highest mean household income($90,000 in 2017). Japanese Americans have strong ties with their cultural heritage as expressed by their access to Japanese films through digital media in the United Sates. They are not, however, as well presented in theatrical distribution.  Data from Mojo covering 417 foreign language films with a box office of 1 million or more from 1980 – 2017 lists four Japanese films (Shall We Dance 1977, Kagemusha 1980, Departure 2009, The Blind Swordsman 2004), whereas Chinese language films, films from India and productions from France and Germany scored higher in theatrical distribution. Films from China and India do best by far outranking France and Germany.  The Japan External Trade Organization emphasizes in an overview of Japanese Film and Television that the content of Japanese productions influence the American entertainment industry through adaptations (Godzilla), source material from manga (Edge of Tomorrow), acquisition of rights to popular Japanese bestselling stories and live action content. Netflix is identified as an active player.  Whereas Japan’s films do not play a dominant role in the United States, the Japanese market is important for American productions since Japan is the 3rd largest global film market after North America and China. In 2014 615 Japanese and 569 imported films were released generating a box office of $1.9 billion. Since 2008 more Japanese than foreign films have been shown each year yet US films retain their leading position. Of the 15 most popular films last year, ten were American.

Japan Cuts presented this year its 11th edition from July 13-23, a program including 28 feature films and 6 shorts. None of the films had been shown before in New York City and 13 were international and North American premieres. An enthusiastic audience took advantage of a rare opportunity to encounter the best and boldest new Japanese cinema enhanced by long Q&A sessions for each production with participating directors, actors and special guests.  Several parties completed the viewing experience and a relatively large part of the audience had attended earlier editions of Japan Cuts and proved familiar with the Japanese visual culture and language.  The 2017 Cut Above Award for Outstanding Performance in Film was presented to Joe Odagiri the “remarkably talented box office golden boy and matinee idol of Japan”.

The 2017 Japan Cuts selection covered a broad range of themes and issues reflecting the complex layers of Japanese culture and the evolving identities as well as recuperating relevant stories from the past. Old master filmmakers such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Sion Sono presented their latest films tackling issues of anxiety and the supernatural and the subversion of the Japanese pornographic genre. Other features dealt with the complicated Japan US relationship and the quest for an LGBTQ identity in an oppressive urban environment. In the Classics: Rediscoveries and Restauration rarely screened productions were presented like The Ondekoza by Tai Kato, Once Upon a Time by Kei Shichiri and a gem of avant-garde cinema Sijun Suzuki’s Zigeunerweisen. The documentary section focused on Japanese Americans in WWII internment camps, dolphin hunting in Taji and idol culture in Japan. Two features in Experimental Spotlight explored cinematic forms and an unconventional impressionistic take on fantasy, memory and reality. The Short showcase by new and established film makers  was devoted to a  sexual triangle between a couple and a male lover and its absurd climax, the conflicts experienced by a production intern, an encounter of a white color obsessed t-shirt wearer with a contract killer, and the chase of an asthmatic young man after his deceased boyfriend’s ghost.

The festival was curated by Aiko Masubuchi, Kazu Watanabe, and Joel Neville Anderson who note that, ”…  JAPAN CUTS reveals a cinema contending with crisis and breaking boundaries of form and content, complicating   traditional gender roles and sexuality, addressing traumas of war and racism, uncovering buried histories, and revealing the potential for social resistance”

Daguerrotype, Kiyashi Kurosawa, France 2016

As an international coproduction produced in France and co-funded by the European arte consortium Daguerreotype is for the festival program an unusual film. It is a French language thriller subtitled in English with a Japanese director and European actors. An established fashion photographer Stephane is obsessed with the daguerreotype process and with the image of his wife who killed herself. Their daughter Marie looks like his wife and he gets her image close to perfection in hour long sessions, as if to give immortality to his wife. A young assistant. Jean, helps but falls in love with Marie and designs a plot to sell Stephan’s house and elope with Marie, a plot with disastrous consequences for all evolved.  Supernatural elements such as Stephan’s visions of his deceased wife and the disappearance of Marie add tensions to this superbly executed thriller.

At the Terrace, Kenji Yamauchi, Japan, 2016

A night-time party is given by a company director and his wife for some friends and employees. Reminiscent of a piece of theater the action is confined to the terrace of the director’s home.  Rapid verbal exchanges between the guests and the hosts soon reveal characters hidden behind their normal appearance and socially expected behavior.  Keeping the action to one place with one set only and restricting it to seven actors permits revealing hidden motivations and desires. The result is a comedy with sarcastic overtones. We learn about sexual desires, the interest in the wives of others, rivalries, embarrassing and shaming behavior, secrets of the hosting couple as revealed by their son Teruo who is also attracted to the wife, of one guest, and homosexual desires by two men known to be straight otherwise. Hosts and guests consume more liquor and the social rituals, stratification and masks they adhere too in everyday behavior are abandoned. The unmasking and abandon of constraints so typical for Japanese society is convincingly conveyed by the performance of the seven actors.

Over the Fence, Nobuhiro Yamashita, 2016

Introduced by Joe Odagiri who also plays the principle male role the film received the Tama Cinema Award for best film and best actor (Joe Odagiri) and best actress (Yu Aoi). Over the Fence is an accomplished character study of individuals living at the fringes of society and set in the decaying northern port city of Hakodate, a small city.  Unemployed Shiraiwa joins a vocational carpentry program to ensure getting continued unemployment benefits and meets numerous other young trainees facing the same condition. Recently divorced he left wife and a young child. He lives by himself and seems introverted and withdrawn. Through a co-worker he meets Satoshi, who seems to be his opposite. She is temperamental, extroverted and prone to emotional outburst. She works in a bar and has a job taking care of small animals in a zoo with a special sentiment for birds. No matter what the location may be, she enacts the animals’ behavior imitating mostly birds.  In spite of their differences they are drawn to each other.  Yoshio stays reserved not openly showing emotions while Satoshi seems unable to control hers. Both have insecurities and have been damaged by past experiences. Yoshio is traumatized by his marital experience and is beset by guilt and Satochi is distrustful of those close to her. Over the Fence is an outstanding example of minimalistic Japanese film making.

Pardo d'oro to MRS. FANG by WANG Bing

Pardo d'oro to MRS. FANG by WANG Bing © Locarno Festival

The 2017 edition, the fifth under Carlo Chatrian as artistic director, has ended successfully and has been crowned by the Pardo d’oro for the film MRS. FANG directed by WANG Bing.

261 films in 11 days, 16 under the open sky in the Piazza Grande and 18 in the Concorso internazionale. Among great guests attending this year feature unforgettable greetings to the Piazza by Todd Haynes and by Jean–Marie Straub, the toast by Mathieu Kassovitz, Michel Merkt’s roar and a touched Adrien Brody. José Luis Alcaine, Nastassja Kinski, Aleksander Sokurov have also appeared along with them on stage for the section dedicated to Locarno70 and the Premio Cinema Ticino awarded to Esmé Sciaroni.

Tributes to great artists who have passed on, such as Jeanne Moreau, Hans Hurch and George Romero, have not been forgotten.

In the context of this evening’s Award ceremony on the Piazza Grande, it was announced that the Prix Public UBS is awarded to THE BIG SICK, by Michael Showalter.

Carlo Chatrian, Artistic Director: ”Locarno70 is about to end, and the first provisional assessment is positive. The magical moments that characterised the evenings on the Piazza Grande have been many, just like the guests who offered the public precious moments, or the films that occasioned a full house, or the proposals which aroused interest in the press and professionals. Locarno has confirmed itself as a hub for discerning what direction the currents of independent cinema are taking, but also as a meeting venue between those who create cinema and those who enjoy it, between those who come from very far away and those who on the other hand represent a territory. Seeing the queues outside the new PalaCinema, or the GranRex cinema packed in every one of its rows for a retrospective which has hit its target, fills us with joy and makes us look towards the future with optimism.”

Mario Timbal, Chief Operating Officer: “According to our intentions, this edition wished to be both a celebration for the seventieth anniversary and a springboard for the next years of the Festival at the same time. The rising attendance and the many positive feed-backs we received clearly indicate that our targets have been met. The new screening rooms have consolidated the basic infrastructure of the event, and the meeting areas and many collateral events have demonstrated a great potential which can be developed further over the coming years, allowing the Festival to look confidently towards the future.”

The Awards PDF may be downloaded here.

The evening on the Piazza Grande will end with the official awards and the screening of the closing film GOTTHARD – ONE LIFE, ONE SOUL by Kevin Merz.

The 71st Locarno Festival will take place from 1 to 11 August 2018.

Game of Thrones content leak: India’s Prime Focus issues statement

I have received the following communication today, 16 August 2017, in Mumbai, by email

STATEMENT FROM PRIME FOCUS TECHNOLOGIES

Mumbai, India (August 15, 2017) - On August 4, 2017, a link to view Episode 4 of Season 7 of Game of Thrones, bearing a Star India (TV network operators, distribution partners of HBO in India) watermark, appeared online, three days before its airdate, as an outcome of an illegal breach of obligations, by current and former employees of Prime Focus Technologies (PFT).

PFT immediately initiated forensic investigations to determine the cause. Based on a multi-faceted investigation, including extensive logs of our system, a complaint was filed on August 6, 2017, and supplementary information was provided on multiple occasions, culminating in a First Information Report (FIR) being filed with the DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) Cyber Cell, of Mumbai Police, by Shailesh Manohar, Vice President at PFT, on August 9, 2017. Acting on the information and extensive evidence provided by PFT, the office of DCP Cyber Cell, Mumbai arrested 4 accused on August 14.

PFT is appreciative of the speed and rigour with which the Special Inspector General of Police IGP (Cyber), Government of Maharashtra, and DCP Cyber Cell, of Mumbai Police, have moved on this investigation. PFT is working closely with its client and co-operating with the police to take the investigation to its logical conclusion at the earliest, and to prosecute the perpetrators of this crime.

PFT has been engaged with Star India as one of its key technology partners since 2011. PFT manages 1.5 million hours of content for some of the world’s biggest broadcasters and studios, globally. As a technology partner, PFT invests in content integrity and security, makes significant investments to ensure content protection, and is ISO 27001 & SOC2 Certified.

It is important to note that this was not a system hack. It was an illegal breach of obligations by the concerned persons, despite PFT’s continual internal emphasis on protocols of content security and ethical practices. We deeply regret and condemn this incident – and affirm our strong resolve to continue the fight against content-related crimes, in an effort to make the M&E industry’s content more secure. PFT has always been, and remains, committed to the highest standards in content security and integrity in managing its clients' content.

This incident should not be confused with the HBO hack being reported.

*Game of Thrones is an original series by HBO, based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series.

**In the end of July 2017, there was an HBO statement: “HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information. We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cyber-security firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold.”

***The hackers email: “Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. . . HBO is falling.”

The e-mail also included the phone number of HBO’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Jeff Cusson’s office.

****On August 7, The Hollywood Reporter claimed its office received an e-mail containing a video letter from the hacker. In the video, the hacker allegedly demands money from HBO, claiming that the network is their 17th hacking target (three prior targets, they claim, failed to pay), and alleges it took six months to gain access to the company’s database.

*****The Guardian reported on August 8 that hackers have released 3.4GB of data, and that they’re demanding that HBO pay an undisclosed ransom to prevent further leaks. Contained within the leaked data are draft scripts from five Game of Thrones episodes, and technical documents, detailing HBO’s internal network and administrator passwords.

******NDTV India posted on the web today: Parts of the upcoming sixth episode of Game of Thrones' on-going season 7 have leaked online, after it was accidentally aired by HBO España on Tuesday night, a full five days before its usual airing date. This isn't part of the HBO hack from last month, but a separate incident in itself.

The episode appears to be genuine, judging by the clips and screenshots now circulating across multiple threads on Reddit. One screenshot also confirms the episode length we already know of, at 1 hour and 11 minutes, further adding to its genuineness.

While the full episode hasn't surfaced yet, some Reddit users claim to have seen live-streams on Twitch and YouTube before they were taken down.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sixth episode of Game of Thrones, season 7, is set to air Sunday, August 20 on HBO in the USA. It will be available Monday, August 21 on the Hotstar App of STAR, and aired on Tuesday, August 22 on STAR World in India.

Batman & Spiderman Walk Into MOLLY’S GAME, But Jessica Chastain Doesn’t Cave to Superheroes

Holy Toledo, sometimes an insider Hollywood story is so good, you see how the game is played.

Jessica Chastain in MOLLY'S GAME

Jessica Chastain in MOLLY'S GAME

So once upon a Batman, and a few-movies-ago Spiderman, the caped one and the web slinger became poker fanatics, like super fanatics, in a snake-pit-named Hollywood club’s back room, a club once owned by a Pirate.

True story, plus there’s an ex-Olympic skier with the same name as a character from James Joyce’s opus “Ulysses” who ran the tables, the whole game. But in a short decade the card mania went awry, as doomed as an Irish-made ocean liner, whose lead also flipped his chips there as the face-card bash spread from LA to NYC to the FBI.

Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba in MOLLY'S GAME

Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba in MOLLY'S GAME

MOLLY’S GAME is based on the Joycean real-life Molly Bloom’s 2014 book “Molly's Game: High Stakes, Hollywood's Elite, Hotshot Bankers, My Life in the World of Underground Poker,” from HarperCollins.

Her memoir begins circa 2004 and spans almost a decade of decadence. Lawless screen siren Jessica Chastain is die-cast as the ‘Poker Princess’ who found her mettle dealing with all the superheroes’ undesirable antics. Red is on fire in this one, shall we say.

Aaron Sorkin’s movie mostly deals with Bloom’s fight for survival with the Feds on gambling and likely racketeering charges, but Chastain also has to find an air hole in a superego’s off-screen realm where every A-Lister is vying for all the oxygen in a room where huge money stakes makes everyone a lot uglier in a hurry. As in "bark like a seal," ugly.

Ultimately Batman and versions-ago Spiderman end up in high-profile divorces while their wronged spouses, one a movie star, the other a studio mogul’s daughter, end up vindicated. Wait, scratch that, will end up vindicated as MOLLY’S GAME is released by STX Films on Nov. 22. So tempting to say *payback is a bitch,* but you get the drift.

Jessica Chastain and Chris O'Dowd in MOLLY'S GAME

Jessica Chastain and Chris O'Dowd in MOLLY'S GAME

Again this gambit/movie comes from the deft hand of writer/director Aaron Sorkin, who literally can make a piece of paper into a smash hit. Sorkin has so many credits, though THE SOCIAL NETWORK rings a bell to most people. Amy Pascal, ex-SONY hack now indie purveyor, lays down her aces as a producer; Idris Elba also comes into play here as memorable onscreen; with Kevin Costner taking a break from his own helming ways to add a hell of a sweet cameo. Michael Cera is the pivot point, a clue to Hollywood’s real elite players mentioned above.

You gotta see this story to believe it. Bridesmaid's Chris O'Dowd rounds out a great cast here that includes Graham Greene, Joe Keery and Rachel Skarsten.

Make Your Bets This Will Be Something of a Royal Flush

MOLLY's GAME will open first at TIFF, Sept. 7-17, mark it down, dude!

Playing Pick-Up STX, Or Close to the Bone On Official Notes?

MOLLY’S GAME is based on the true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe. In Theaters November 22, 2017 Cast: Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Chris O'Dowd, Michael Cera, Joe Keery, Rachel Skarsten, Graham Greene and Brian d'Arcy James Director: Aaron Sorkin Writer: Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin. Based on the memoir by Molly Bloom Producers: Stuart M. Besser, Mark Gordon, Leopoldo Gout, Matt Jackson, Lauren Lohman, Lyn Lucibello and Amy Pascal

The story of film in Melbourne could not be written without MIFF.

MIFF is a not-for-profit organisation that has been continuously running since 1952, making it the leading film festival in Australia and one of the world’s oldest film festivals, alongside Cannes and Berlin. Presenting a curated global program of innovative screen experiences and the world’s largest showcase of exceptional Australian filmmaking, MIFF is an accessible, iconic cultural event that provides transformative experiences for audiences and filmmakers alike.

MIFF is an Australian cultural icon which has had an essential role in putting Melbourne on the national and international cultural map. It has also been a key player in building a sense of community and connectedness in Melbourne. The festival has an innate appreciation of its famously loyal audience, all of whom come to MIFF for bold, entertaining and adventurous programming, the delight of the shared festival experience, and to discover something new about themselves, or the world around them.

The Melbourne International Film Festival’s vision for the future builds on MIFF’s role at the centre of Melbourne’s cultural life and in particular its success in generating both social and economic capital for Melbourne and Victoria. Complementing MIFF’s highly anticipated festival program is MIFF's renowned industry program that includes an investment fund (the Premiere Fund) and the director's development program (Accelerator). MIFF's finance market (37°South) brings the national and international screen industry to Melbourne during the festival and celebrates Melbourne as a centre for screen business. MIFF also supports emerging arts and culture writers through its annual Critics Campus program, and takes the film festival experience to regional Victoria through the MIFF Travelling Showcase.

MIFF will continue to innovate and build on its decades of achievements to ensure that Melbourne remains the cultural capital of Australia, and that MIFF continues to be Australia’s largest and most significant film festival in terms of international profile, audience size, the quality and breadth of its festival and industry programs.
