Dear Stephen Sepher,
"I really enjoyed your film last night. As mentioned, it looked like a $25 million movie. Beautifully shot, camera choreography, production value and sound. You gave a great performance as well, along with your fellow cast members. I hope you think about making your next movie here in Rhode Island. We have had approximately $400 million of production here in our Ocean State since I returned home and began an incentive program. Films of all sizes. If you are interested in accessing our Motion Picture Tax Incentive program, go to our website www.film.ri.gov The minimum spend is $100,000 of qualified expenditures on the ground in Rhode Island. Once you achieve that number, you can qualify for the 25% incentive, which includes above the line. Resident and non resident allowed."
We can discuss at greater detail when you are ready to look for you rnext film.
In the meantime, I hope you had a blast here in Rhode Island and soaked in the festival and all of her treasures.
Bravo, good sir, to you and your talented team!
Wishing you continued great health and much success!
Be proud!
Warmly,
Steven Feinberg

"Scrappy" will have its California premiere in the state's capitol of Sacramento with the city's Film and Music Festival, September 22-24, 2017. The festival will be held in the historic Jean Runyon Theater.
Helmed and adapted for the screen by Dawn Westlake, "Scrappy" is based on the Studs Terkel Humanities Award-winning poem by her father, Donald G. Westlake. The poem recounts Westlake's real-life anecdote about standing up to the gun culture in the USA at the tender age of 6 in rural Illinois.
"Scrappy" was shot on location in Pine Mountain and Los Angeles, California. DP/Editing/VFX were by Pol Carrizo-Vilarroig of Imatge Barcelona. GC Johnson of Acoustic Labs scored.
The film introduces 5-yr-old actress Nefertina Lizarraga and her dog Kong (as SCRAPPY).

That old tourist ad slogan “Virginia Is For Lovers” has now been flipped on its head. What are we to do?
Well, First Run Features President Seymour Wishman has a few ideas. This came to my inbox this morning, likely saved my day, because we are all powerless at this moment in history, powerless to change hearts and minds, and just compelled to not engage, to do our jobs and run our lives… or figure out something like this.
Open Letter From FIRST RUN FEATURES
President Seymour Wishman Dated Aug. 17, 2017
First Run Features was founded to make available independent films, mostly social/political issue documentaries, to the public. The kind of tough, insightful, sometimes outrageous titles we've distributed in theaters, schools and on television and home video over the last 40 years comprises the largest collection of films dealing with civil rights and the plight of the underdog in America.
The recent actions of neo-nazis, KKK, white supremacists, racists and anti-Semites in Charlottesville reinforces our commitment to expose the evil and danger these people represent.
One of the first films we distributed and still do is Blood in the Face produced by Village Voice contributor James Ridgeway, Academy Award nominee Anne Bohlen and The Atomic Cafe producer Kevin Rafferty, and featuring interviews with Michael Moore. The film includes rare archival footage, interviews, and promotional materials that reveal the inner workings of the Ku Klux Klan, the American Nazi Party, the Aryan Nation, The Order, and other radical right groups who speak of imminent race wars, Armageddon, the Holocaust hoax, interracial breeding, the Christian Identity faith, the hordes of foreign troops poised to attack America, and ZOG (The Zion Occupation Government).

Almost 40 years later we began distributing Welcome to Leith, which chronicles the attempted takeover of a small town in North Dakota by notorious white supremacist Craig Cobb. As his behavior becomes more threatening, tensions soar, and the residents desperately look for ways to expel their unwanted neighbor. With incredible access to both longtime residents of Leith and white supremacists, the film examines a small community in the plains struggling for sovereignty against an extremist vision.
Today First Run has about 500 films in our collection, with a number that also deal with the threat of the far right. I am particularly eager for as many people as possible to see Blood in the Face and Welcome to Leith and would like to offer them on DVD at a discounted price of $5 through 8/31. Use coupon code FIGHTHATE at www.firstrunfeatures.com. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

I’m not on their payroll, and haven't seen all of the movies Mr. Wishman recommends, but it lifted me up just a little bit to read this, and hopefully it lifts you up for the day too. None are immune from the viral phenomenon of this piercing cacophony of raised voices, sweaty faces, burning torches, in words or in imagery out in our world.
We will remember #heatherheyer out loud. Next there’s Barcelona, Spain, another vehicle-rage incident cut to fit somebody’s agenda.
After that, who knows, but without looking away, we can look into ourselves and look at each other, and say ‘Not Me, Friend, Not Me,’ and light a candle - held up in trust for the future and for the fallen.
Back to the movies… see you in the audience soon.

The 61st BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® is thrilled to serve up BATTLE OF THE SEXES, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell, as this year’s American Express Gala at this year’s Festival. The film will receive its European Premiere on Saturday 7 October at London’s Odeon Leicester Square, with Emma Stone, Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, and the legendary Billie Jean King expected to attend. The BFI London Film Festival, Fox Searchlight Pictures and American Express® are also delighted to announce that there will be screenings of BATTLE OF THE SEXES with highlights from the festival premiere taking place at cinemas across the UK on Tuesday 10 October.
In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.
|
Starring Academy Award® winner Emma Stone and Academy Award® nominee Steve Carell as 1970’s tennis greats Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, BATTLE OF THE SEXES is directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton from a screenplay by Academy Award® winner Simon Beaufoy. BATTLE OF THE SEXES also stars Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming and Academy Award® nominee Elisabeth Shue.
The film is produced by Cloud Eight Films’ Christian Colson and Decibel Films’ Danny Boyle, the team behind Academy Award® winning and nominated films such as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours and Steve Jobs. Also producing is Robert Graf, who has previously collaborated with the directors on Ruby Sparks and has produced such projects as Hail, Caesar and No Country for Old Men.
|
Clare Stewart, BFI London Film Festival Director, says: “We are delighted that Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton’s BATTLE OF THE SEXES will be this year's American Express Gala. This playful, funny and moving film is a rousing tribute to Billie Jean King whose impact on gender politics was as powerful as her legendary forehand.”
|
Christian Colson, producer BATTLE OF THE SEXES says: "Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, together with our exceptional ensemble led by Emma Stone and Steve Carell, have brought Simon Beaufoy's richly textured screenplay joyously to life and I can't wait to share the film with my fellow Londoners at LFF".
Twentieth Century Fox will release the film across the UK and Ireland on 24 November.
The 61st BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® takes place from Wednesday 4 October-Sunday 15 October 2017. The full Festival programme will be announced on Thursday 31 August 2017.

On the 8th of September the festival opens its gate with the screening of ‘Shortcuts’ aka ‘Cutting it Short’ with the director, JiřiMenzel and the leading actress, Magda Vásáryova as special guests. The Academy Award winner director is this year’s Lifetime Achievement Aawrd winner, and the actress and diplomat Vásáryova has been chosen as the recipient of the Europe Award, founded last year.
Menzel is one of the most influential figures of the Central European cinema. His first movie ‘Closely Watched Trains’ won the Oscar in 1968. The film ‘Larks on Strings’ shot one year after the Oscar was withheld by censors and released only in 1989 in which year’s Berlinale it won the Golden Bear – something that has been unprecedented before.
“Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! That’s what I call original great humor!” – wrote Kunder to Menzel after the premiere of ‘I Served the King of England’. In a country of ten million people, the film attracted more than one million viewer in the Czech Republic in 2006. It was Menzel’s sixth Hrabal-adaptation. In his films comedy, tragedy, sentimentalism, humor and irony plays together in a way that is only the characteristic of the greatest masters. The legendary director of ‘Capricious Summer’, ‘The Snowdrop Festival’, the Oscar nominee ‘My Sweet Little Village’ and the ‘Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin’ has also played in several films – including some Hungarian ones as well. He is also a well-known stage director.
The leading actress of ‘Shortcuts’ aka ‘Cutting it Short’, Magda Vásáryova was 19 when she played the leading role in the Czech film, ‘Marketa Lazarova’. The three-hours epic is considered by the critics and film historians one of the European masterpieces of the golden years of the 1960s. A few years back, the premiere of its digitally re-mastered copy has been a true headliner. The actress is not only acknowledged for dozens of great roles but also for her career in politics. After the regime change she became a politician and a diplomat, making it up the being Slovakian presidential candidate. She also served as ambassador and state secretary of foreign affairs. The actress and politician speaks several languages and has a truly European point of view. After Juliette Binoche in 2016, she is named Ambassador of the European Cinema by the 14th Jameson CineFest in 2017.

The Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) announced today that Glenn Close will receive the Golden Icon Award at this year’s Festival, which takes place from September 28 to October 8, 2017.
The Golden Icon Award is the Festival’s most prestigious symbol of recognition, in appreciation of the lifetime achievements of an actor or actress. Glenn Close will be honored with the award on Sunday October 1.
Ms Close will also present her latest film, THE WIFE with her co-stars Jonathan Pryce and Annie Starke and director Björn Runge.
Behind any great man, there’s always a greater woman … and you’re about to meet her. It is crucial you get to know this woman – many of us already do and don't even realise it.
Joan Castleman (Glenn Close): a highly intelligent and still-striking beauty - the perfect alpha wife. Forty years spent sacrificing her own talent, dreams and ambitions to fan the flames of her charismatic husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his skyrocketing literary career. Ignoring his infidelities and excuses because of his "art" with grace and humour.
Their fateful pact has built a marriage upon uneven compromises. And Joan’s reached her breaking point. On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature, the crown jewel in a spectacular body of work, Joan's coup de grace is to confront the biggest sacrifice of her life and secret of his career. The Wife is a poignant, funny and emotional journey; a celebration of womanhood, self-discovery and liberation.
ZFF Co-Directors Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri state “We’re honored to present Glenn Close with our Golden Icon Award at this year’s Festival. From her commanding portrayal of Patty Hewes in Damages to the glorious Marquise de Merteuil in Stephen Frears’ Dangerous Liaisons via Alex Forrest and Cruella De Vil, Glenn Close has brought her extraordinary presence to countless memorable roles over a truly formidable career. We are delighted to welcome her to Zurich and screen her latest film THE WIFE.”
Credit Suisse is the official partner of the Golden Icon Award.
A six-time Academy Award nominee, Ms Close has recently completed filming on Julian Fellow’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Crooked House alongside an all-star cast that included Max Irons, Christina Hendricks, Gillian Anderson and Terence Stamp. Other recent films include the sci-fi thriller What Happened to Monday, The Girl With All the Gifts, Wilde Wedding and the comedy Bastards.
Ms Close reprised her Tony Award-winning role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard in a new production at the London Coliseum in 2016 (bringing her a London Evening Standard Award and an Olivier Award nomination). The full production, starring Close, opened on Broadway in February 2017.
Ms Close made her feature film debut in George Roy Hill's The World According to Garp, earning her awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Board of Review as well as her first Academy Award nomination. She was subsequently Oscar-nominated for The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons (for which she was also a BAFTA Award nominee) and Albert Nobbs (which earned her Golden Globe and SAG nominations). For Albert Nobbs, Close also wrote the screenplay with John Banville, was a producer on the film and composed the lyrics for the Golden Globe and World Soundtrack-nominated song, “Lay Your Head Down.”
Her film credits also include Richard Marquand's Jagged Edge, Barbet Schroeder's Reversal of Fortune, Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet, István Szabó's Meeting Venus, Ron Howard's The Paper, Stephen Herek's 101 Dalmatians, Kevin Lima's 102 Dalmatians, Wolfgang Petersen's Air Force One, Robert Altman's Cookie's Fortune, Rose Troche's The Safety of Objects, Merchant Ivory's Le Divorce, Chris Terrio's Heights, Rodrigo García's Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her and Nine Lives, Evening, Low Down, 5 to 7, Anesthesia, The Great Gilly Hopkins and Guardians of the Galaxy.
For her riveting portrayal of high-stakes litigator Patty Hewes in the critically acclaimed television series Damages, Close won two consecutive Emmys as “Best Actress in a Drama Series” and two subsequent Emmy nominations (bringing her total number of Emmy nominations to twelve) along with a Golden Globe Award and three SAG Award nominations. Close’s twelve Golden Globe nominations include a Best Actress win for Andrei Konchalovsky's adaptation of The Lion in Winter (which also earned her a SAG Award).
Other television credits include her Emmy award winning role in Serving in Silence: the Margarethe Cammermeyer Story (for which she also received a Peabody Award as executive producer), South Pacific and Sarah, Plain and Tall, both of which she also executive produced, The Shield, The Elephant Man, Something About Amelia, Stones for Ibarra, The Ballad of Lucy Whipple and In the Gloaming, for which she won a CableACE Award.
Close made her theatre, and Broadway, debut in Harold Prince's revival of Love for Love. Her theater credits include The Crucifer of Blood, The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs (Obie Award), Barnum (Tony nomination) and Tony Awards for her performances in The Real Thing and Death and the Maiden, both directed by Mike Nichols. In London, she reteamed with the director of the original Sunset Boulevard stage production, Trevor Nunn, in his Royal National Theatre revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. She returned to Broadway for the 2014 revival production of Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance.

· Pinewood Studios Group continue to offer the £20,000 award for Best British LGBT short film
· Trans stories make up almost a third of the competing films presented by some of Britain’s brightest film makers
Organisers of the Iris Prize have today (09/08/2017) announced details of the 15 short films competing for the Best British Award at the 2017 Iris Prize Festival. The winner who will be presented with a prize valued at £20,000 from sponsors Pinewood Studios Group will be announced during the October film festival in Cardiff, Wales.
Andrew Pierce, Iris Prize Chair, commented:
“This strand of the festival has become very popular as we focus on home grown talent. With nominating partners in Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Bristol we are confident that we cover all the bases and this year is possibly the strongest yet with the highest number of submissions recorded this year.
As we recognise the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales it is pleasing to see how life for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people has changed over the years. This is reflected in the stories our filmmakers have decided to share and it’s worth noting that one third of the films deal with trans stories.
One of the many highlights is the animated short Bearable by David James Holloway which asks the question what if your tribe within the gay community defined you? What if you lived with a real bear? Iris is many things to many people but to most of us she is a window on the world, and as our new strapline asks: “What will you see in Cardiff?”

A retired couple, Bernard and Helen Martin, inherit a remote house in rural France, the very same village Bernard’s war hero father liberated during the Second World War, over 70 years earlier. This peaceful couple quickly become the target of a crual gang of street kids, who terrorise the village.
An e-generation permanently plugged into their devices, devoid of empathy, a new breed of technological psychopath…Pushed beyond breaking point, can Bernard live up to his father’s legend, as the situation explodes into a brutal war of generations ?

In the Sala Darsena at the Lido: the legendary silent film Rosita (1923) by Ernst Lubitsch, in a vivid new restoration by MoMA, with the support of The Film Foundation, and presented as a world premiere
Live musical accompaniment by the Mitteleuropa Orchestra directed by Gillian Anderson from her arrangement of the original score
Rosita (1923, 82’), famed as the single collaboration between two of the giants of the silent screen, the director Ernst Lubitsch and the star Mary Pickford, is the film that has been chosen for the Pre-inaugural evening of the 74th Venice International Film Festival, which will be held on Tuesday, August 29th in the Sala Darsena (Palazzo del Cinema) at the Lido.
Rosita, will be screened in a new 4K digital restoration effected by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, with the support of The Film Foundation; this will be the restored version’s world premiere.
The projection of Rosita will feature live music played by the Mitteleuropa Orchestra of Friuli – Venezia Giulia, directed by the musicologist Gillian Anderson, who has reconstructed the film’s original score by working on scores recovered at the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C.
Rosita is set in a mythical Spain where an engagingly lecherous King (Holbrook Blinn) has cast his eye on a popular but provocative street singer (Mary Pickford). She, in turn, yearns for the handsome young nobleman (George Walsh, brother of the celebrated director Raoul Walsh), who has rescued her from the angry king’s guards and has been condemned to a dungeon for his troubles.
