Few actors are as recognizable in American movies as Harry Dean Stanton. The singularly mild-mannered face of the New Hollywood, his repertoire expands to dozens of appearances in beloved studio, cult and independent movies, with only a handful of starring roles to his name. In a career spanning more than 60 years, Stanton’s inimitable, gently hangdog persona revealed a capacity for harebrained agitation and profound melancholy that prove equally disarming, all while never less than at ease on camera. Stanton has worked with many of the most important names in international cinema, from Sam Peckinpah to Wim Wenders to David Lynch. On occasion of his starring role in Lucky (opening September 29 courtesy of Magnolia Pictures)—and keeping in mind critic Roger Ebert’s famous proclamation that no film with his presence could be without merit—the Quad is proud to present a wide-ranging selection of his most memorable roles.

Closing Gala of 61st BFI London Film Festival Announced

lff-2016-title-artwork-750x680_0.jpg

The 61st BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® is delighted to announce that this year’s Closing Night gala will be Martin McDonagh’s THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI. The film will receive its UK premiere on Sunday 15 October at the Odeon Leicester Square and acclaimed screenwriter, director and playwright McDonagh is expected to attend along with Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell and other filmmakers and cast.

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comic drama from Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh. After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Academy Award® winner Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award® nominee Woody Harrelson), the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

Written and directed by Academy Award® winning director Martin McDonagh, THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI stars Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Abbie Cornish, Lucas Hedges, Zeljko Ivanek, Caleb Landry Jones, Clarke Peters, Samara Weaving with John Hawkes and Peter Dinklage.

Fox Searchlight Pictures and Film 4 present a Blueprint Pictures production produced by Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Martin McDonagh, the team behind In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, with executive producers Bergen Swanson, Diarmuid McKeown, Rose Garnett, David Kosse and Daniel Battsek and co-producer Ben Knight. The filmmaking team includes director of photography Ben Davis, BSC, production designer Inbal Weinberg, film editor Jon Gregory, ACE, costume designer Melissa Toth, music by Carter Burwell and casting by Sarah Halley Finn, CSA.

BFI London Film Festival Director, Clare Stewart says: “We are thrilled to be closing the 61st BFI London Film Festival with Martin McDonagh’s THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI. By turns riotously funny and deeply sobering, this all-too-relevant film confronts division and conflict in small-town America and is driven by a blistering performance from Frances McDormand.”

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI Director Martin McDonagh says: "I'm excited to bring this film back to my home town for its UK premiere. I'm more than proud of it and if there are any fans of In Bruges still out there, I don't think they'll be disappointed."

Twentieth Century Fox will release the film across the UK and Ireland on 12 January, 2018.

The 61st BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® takes place from Wednesday 4 October-Sunday 15 October 2017. The full Festival programme will be announced on Thursday 31 August 2017.

DIVERSE, DISTINCT, AND DARING:
SYDNEY LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES PROGRAM!

SLAFF%20HEADER%282%29.jpg

From the wonderful and inspiring to the thought-provoking, say hola to the 12th annual Sydney Latin American Film Festival (SLAFF) this September (07-11). Returning to Dendy Opera Quays, the Festival will screen a specially curated program of captivating contemporary Latin American cinema: eight feature films, two documentaries, and seven shorts, along with vibrant opening and closing night parties, over five jam-packed days.

From stories of human resilience, to political turmoil and redemption, the 2017 program focusses on diversity and representation, providing engaging insight into the vast cross-section of Latin American cultures.

“Fifty percent of this year’s program comprises of female directors, and showcases who we are as a whole continent, with representation from Central and South America, and a special Caribbean spotlight. The program highlights the wonderful kaleidoscope that is the Latin world, bringing films from Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic to Sydney,” said Festival Programmer Lidia Luna.

The Festival opens with pre-screening drinks and Pablo’s Kitchen empanadas introducing the Australian premiere of On the Roof. The inspirational film follows three young dreamers who share their aspirations together on the rooftops of Havana every day, as they set up their own local business, and learn more about themselves than ever expected.

A spectacular Opening Night Fiesta kicks on after the screening, with Armandito and Trovason bringing their exuberant blend of Cuban rhythms, from Mambo to Rumba to Buena Vista Social Club, to the intimate space of The Basement.

Adriana’s Pact is Lissette Orozco’s extremely personal documentary on her aunt Adriana Rivas, and her involvement with the terrifying secret police of the Chilean Pinochet military dictatorship. Accused of the kidnapping, torture and murder of political opponents, Rivas is currently considered a fugitive by the Chilean Supreme Court and currently resides in Sydney and the NSW government facing mounting community pressure for Rivas’ extradition. The film follows Orozco’s journey as she unearths harsh truths about her beloved aunt.

Bad Influence, the debut feature film from Claudia Huaiquimilla (San Juan, La Noche Más Larga – SLAFF 2013) tackles the issues and struggles of the Indigenous Chilean Mapuche people. An outsider story set in the margins of society, the film follows a troubled petty criminal from Santiago, and a shy outsider from the Indigenous community who band together after the strange death of a Mapuche leader.

Not to be missed is Everything Else, a thought-provoking examination of solitude starring Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza (Babel, Amores Perros) as a reclusive bureaucrat spending her nights watching romance films with her beloved cat Manuelito. When her only companion dies, she is forced to reach out for any kind of human connection.

Elis is a captivating biopic of the life of iconic Brazilian singer Elis Regina. From her humble beginnings, to her rise to the international stage, to her tragic and untimely death, this engaging feature is a must-see for music lovers.

Sambá, nominated for Best International Narrative Feature at Tribeca Film Festival, is a gritty Dominican sports drama following the stoic-faced hero Cisco, who resorts to street fighting for cash after returning home to the Dominican Republic after 15 years in US prison. Teaming up with washed up former pro boxer Nichi, the two set off to fight their way to personal redemption.

Other festival highlights include Koblic, the blood-pumping story of a Navy pilot who must make an agonizing decision upon discovering his aircraft will be used to execute political prisoners; When the Guns Go Silent, a gripping documentary following Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), the world’s oldest guerilla army, as they negotiate peace with the Colombian government after a 50 year struggle; and El Amparo, which follows two fishermen who must fight for their innocence after returning home from a trip in which 14 men were killed by military gunfire.

Closing the festival is Bad Lucky Goat, the hilarious story of two incompatible siblings who accidentally kill a bearded goat with their father’s truck. Set against the lush green backdrop the Colombian Caribbean, the squabbling duo must embark on a journey around the island together, visiting rastafari drum makers, pawn shops, and witch doctors along the way, as they search for a way to hide the accident.

Pre-screening drinks and a special performance by Errol H Renaud, bringing his exotic Caribbean beats spiced with soca, reggae and conscious lyricism, will wrap the Festival for another great year.

Everything Else, Bad Influence, El Amparo, and Sambá will be competing for the Jury Award for Best Feature Film cash prize, presided over by film programmer Paul Struthers, producer Jonathan Page and filmmaker Daz Chandler.

The 12th Sydney Latin American Film Festival will take place at Dendy Opera Quays cinemas from Thursday 7 September – Monday 11 September 2017 andCasula Powerhouse Arts Centre on Sunday 24 September, screening the very best in award-winning Latin American cinema.

A film about tough streets and tender ties - the World Premiere of “Familiye” will open the Festival on September 13, 2017

After serving a 5-year prison sentence, Danyal is free at last to rejoin life on the outside and resume his role as head of the family. Since the death of his parents, he’s assumed responsibility for his two younger brothers and kept the boys together. But in the rough hood of Berlin-Spandau-Neustadt, keeping a protective rein on both the gambling Miko, and the youngest, Muhammed, with Down syndrome, hasn’t been easy. And in a world where corruption, fear, and criminals dominate, when old debts are due and Muhammed risks being removed from his brothers by authorities and placed in a special care facility, ties that bind the brothers and the fragile balance of their existence threatens to unravel.

In their debut feature, filmmaking duo, Kubilay Sarikaya and Sedat Kirtan, collaborate both off-screen and on as co-writers, directors, producers, and stars of the film. Inspired by the harshness of life on the streets he experienced as a youth, Sarikaya stars as Danyal in the urban labyrinth that entraps the brothers. Captured with striking authenticity - violence, crime, love, and hope pulsate with the power of cinémaverté, as the filmmaking duo offer a rare and loving insight into a world intimate to both.

Award-winning actor, Arnel Taci, stars as Miko, and in his screen debut, Muhammed Kirtan inspires in the role of Muhammed. With Violetta Schurawlow ("Head Full of Honey”) and rapper Xatar (Alles oder Nix Records) - who also contributed to the intense soundtrack and brought in Moritz Bleibtreu as a supporter of the project, who co-produced the film alongside Peter-Jörg Klein.

Determined to realistically portray and make accessible the lives of the people in their neighborhood, Sarikaya and Kirtan joined forces and founded their production company Lynarwood. In 2013, the native Berliners began working on the script, and in 2016 after months of rehearsals, began filming with a verisimilitude that is rare in young German cinema. FAMILIYE is a production of EKC-Film GmbH in co-production with Lynarwood and Paloma Film.

On Wednesday, September 13th, the world premiere of FAMILIYE will be held at the Opening Night Gala of the 24th Edition of the Oldenburg International Film Festival, with the directors, actors, and producers in attendance.
